Who, What, Why: What's the worst place to be bitten by a spider?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-37494945 said:
An Australian has been bitten by a venomous spider on the penis for a second time. Which part of the body do you most want to avoid getting bitten or stung, asks Jon Kelly.

To be bitten once on the penis is unfortunate. A second time and you'd wonder if you were cursed.

On Tuesday the 21-year-old tradesman, identified only as Jordan, was using a portable toilet on a Sydney building site when he was bitten by a redback spider. Again.

"I'm the most unlucky guy in the country at the moment," he lamented to the BBC. The redback's bite causes severe pain, sweating and nausea.

But was this the worst place he could have been bitten?

From "both experience and thinking it through", its possible to identify the least desirable places to be bitten or stung by invertebrates like spiders, bees and wasps, says entomologist Prof Adam Hart of the University of Gloucestershire.

Firstly, fleshy parts of the body, where there's extra room to inject venom and greater capacity for swelling. Secondly, areas with a lot of nerve endings, which are more sensitive and therefore painful. Hart says he's been stung by insects on his scalp, and this was far less unpleasant than when he was stung on a fleshy part of his arm.

But if you were to rank by preference all the places you could be bitten, "right at the bottom would be the penis", Hart says. "Genitals are fleshy and have lots of nerve endings."

It's a poor excuse for a news story, typical of the BBC ofcourse.
I wouldn't want a spider bite on my little thingy, but I'd prefer it to the more pain sensitive area right below it, or the eyes or mouth.
I feel sorry for the Australian, even though he never learned his lesson.
But unless it's self inflicted there's no way of choosing where to avoid being stung so it's an useless question really.

It’s hard to resist adapting the “country” song:

“What’s the worst place to be bitten by a spider,
What’s the worst place to be bitten by a spider,
What’s the worst place to be bitten by a spider?
Looked at overall – on the dick, have thought, I’d ‘a –
Yes, sir.”

Having lived in Australia, I can vouch that red back spiders are a real & present pest in & around many homes. When I was little, I wasn't allowed to go barefoot in or around our house in Melbourne at any time, such was the risk of being bitten.

Like many spiders, red backs prefer to keep away from humans, but they do have a knack of hiding in dark recesses & under a toilet seat is a favourite!

I read the article earlier & got the impression the chap had checked under the toilet seat, so he's been mighty unlucky to get bitten. Not much you can do really if you're in the middle of proceedings & a red back wanders up...

Yes, all things considered, Australia seems to be a pretty bad place to be bitten by a spider !

check under the lid by the sounds of it ;)
He says:
"Toilets got cleaned that day and I thought it was my opportunity to go use one. Had a look under both seats and then I sat down did my business. Next thing you know, I'm bent over in pain."
Some spiders can be very fast moving, so they could have appeared out of nowhere.

I'm glad spiders in Britain are tame compared to these lot!

I've had Ticks on both bits of down there... Both times from camping and going for a wee in ferns. Not a great experience.
I can laugh about it now though, it was a few years ago.

I've been bitten twice by false widows*; fortunately in neither case was it anywhere near anything particularly sensitive!

It still took three months for the itching and swelling to completely go.

*Epsom is full of the damn things.

Shouldn't it be "What's the best place to be bitten by a spider?" since the original title consists of double negatives?

Best place to be bitten by a spider, I'd say Toe-nail.
Way better than anywhere else I can think of.

Back of the mouth would probably be quite bad. Heart too, although unlikely (makes memo never to have open heart surgery in 'Straya).

Interesting. What lesson would that be then?

Don't live in a continent where literally everything is going to kill you! Or if you do, don't go on the land or in the sea, or anywhere the sun shines.

Even the trees will sting you to death given half a chance.

Two pages in and no-one's answered the original question with the obvious double entendre:
Q. What's the worst place to be bitten by a spider?
A. Down under.

Was on holiday in Greece about 15 years ago, and one of our party got bitten by one up the shorts on the bottom whilst in a cafe toilet!!

A couple of days later, a couple of us encountered a sand viper whilst walking through grassy paths looking at ancient monuments.
