Can I ask where you've got 18 months from? Are you merely supposing 'what if the line was closed for 18 months?' or something more substantial?

(Googles Dingwall temporary Light maintenance depot...)

It was purely a hypothetical- I was guessing that such a timescale might make arrangements for servicing units trapped, or make it worthwhile swapping them by road- as I understand it roads in the area aren't the best for shifting units on low-loaders, something along those lines was mentioned during the Pont Briwet closure.

I may be misremembering exactly what the arrangements were with Dingwall, though that too was quite a long closure while the bridge was replaced. I know that services North of Inverness were operated though, and with LHCS too.

If it's a small number of wooden beams that have burnt out, perhaps they could be replaced by temporary metal ones until the correct timber can be sourced? Anyone who visited Derby station during the mid-2000s will know what I mean.

.

On the contrary, a 158 was removed from Barmouth by road only last week! It was moved up from the depot at Machynlleth specifically for that purpose.

That was 158818 with a final drive problem and taken by lowloader to Canton.
Planned to move 158828 (trapped) to Chester where unloading access available and leaving just 2 units trapped and these were worked to Porthmadog on 6th to be fuelled from road tanker.

EDIT:- 158828 - Arrived at Canton this morning, unloaded in Canton Brickyard and moved to Canton Depot.and not taken to Chester. This, presumably due exam required.

Restricted to class 158's only , apparently - on track machines and all other "traction" restricted for now.

Although not fantastic, the Cambrian doesn't see much other traffic than 158s so it won't adversely affect things in the short term.

How will the leaf-fall season be dealt with, I wonder? Does the 950 have the ability to treat railheads? (Though that is academic as AFAIK it isn't ERTMS fitted anyway).

The Cambrian is normally covered by the Network Rail 97s based at Shrewsbury. I'm not sure how far up the coast they normally go though.

Diagram only runs to Machynlleth and back to Shrewsbury does Talerddig bank and the 80 mph line speed parts but not the lower speed coastal zone.

Thanks, wasn't sure on the details out that way. Given the same set covers north wales as well it'd be a long night if it went up the coast as well. I guess that means there's no locos planned over the bridge anytime soon anyway then?

That's surprising considering the infrequent service and rural nature, I'd have thought fallen leaves would play havoc with the 158s!

Do they not treat up to Aberystwyth from Mach?

Not many trees on the Welsh coast?

Atlantic oak grows which means it's technically a rainforest due to the level of precipitation however the vegetation near the line certainly is not prodigious.
