Not in day to day use, out of use and closed are three different things - as the railways demonstrate to us all the time. :)

Edinburgh Airport has two runways and while 12/30 isn't used every day, it definitely still usable and occasionally used.

Indeed, 12/30 was being used a couple of weeks ago. It was a novelty to see planes coming in to land passing very close to my back garden.

I can see it being closed permanently; there are better uses for that space. We shall find out what GIP's vision is tomorrow when the masterplan is published.

Back to the Gateway Station - it only appears on the Scotrail website at the moment as an option, as does Edinburgh Airport (has that always been there). It allows a combined ticket to be issued. I tried on the National Rail website and I couldn't find them.

You are right that ticketing for Edinburgh Gateway is currently a bit hit and miss.

For example, Gateway is not a station known by the booking panel on the front page of the VTEC website, but can be chosen once you get through to the VTEC mixing desk.

And it seems random whether fares to/from Gateway are loaded: I couldn't find any to/from London, but I could find some e.g. to/from York so long (it seemed) that VTEC weren't providing any of the trains for the journey.

The masterplan says it'll be shut by 2025.

A new £41m railway station has opened in the outskirts of Edinburgh.
The Edinburgh Gateway interchange, situated between South Gyle and Dalmeny, will serve passengers from Fife and the north of the city.
The station will link the capital's northern train line to the tram network and Edinburgh Airport and offer local travellers services to Perth, Dundee and Inverness.
A combined train and tram ticket will also be available to passengers.
The station lies next to the Gogar roundabout on the A8 and will also have a link to the Gyle shopping centre.
The work is part of the Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme which will see the electrification of lines across central Scotland.
Phil Verster, managing director of the ScotRail Alliance, said: "Edinburgh Gateway interchange will be a hugely convenient transport hub for a vast array of customers, bringing new journey opportunities and better connections for people travelling into and around the capital."
It is hoped the station will also be a catalyst for future economic investment and activity.

Any news on stopping patterns? Is it just the Fife loop services at first?

We discussed the stopping patterns a while back. It will see (in a standard hour, off-peak)

1tph Edinburgh - Dundee (limited stop service)
1tph Edinburgh - Glenrothes via Kirkcaldy
1tph Edinburgh - Perth (limited stop) with occasional extensions to Inverness
1tph Edinburgh - Glenrothes via Dunfermline

Rush hour sees some extra trains calling, and some services extended to/from Tweedbank.

None of the trains will call at South Gyle, with that station being served by the remaining Fife Circle services. Again, there are some exceptions to this rule in the peaks.

Same.

I'm guessing it's probably because Aberdeen has an International Airport already and doesn't need the connection as much as what the likes of Dundee, Perth or Inverness do?

I think it's because they don't want to add the additional stop yet - it's not that long since they removed the Inverkeithing stop to speed up the express services. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Gateway and/or Inverkeithing stop added when they get the HSTs (assuming a power-door HST GTi can improve on 170 timings).

Travelers can now save 50p on their journey to Edinburgh Airport vs the Airlink bus (£7.50), or £1.50 vs the tram direct from the city centre (£8.50) when travelling via Edinburgh Gateway from Waverley (£7 "bus period return"). Journey time of 20 minutes suggests it's quicker too. Shame they didn't just build a station at the airport and save the hassle of the tram...

I'd still pay the extra 50p for the bus. The tram is a fairly tedious couple of minutes walk from the terminal, and the service frequency from Gateway is going to struggle to compete with an every 10 minutes bus even if it does shave 5 minutes or so off the journey time.

Presumably a simple branch line would have cost less than this.

The simple branch line which was planned was mostly in tunnel. Hence the high costs. Nobody would agree to a surface line.

Eventually a surface tram line was agreed, but this would not be suitable for heavy Rail, due to the curvature. In any case it only goes to the terminal and reverses.

Probably a cheaper solution would be to build the terminal at Edinburgh Gateway station where there is plenty development space.

It's a pity the new station doesn't integrate with any local bus services. It's a fair walk to the bus stops at the Gyle shopping mall.
