Hello!

We're Loco2, I hope you've heard of us (and perhaps even used us!) :)

We have created an infographic and are interested in your views on it. We analysed data from our users' searches to find out how and when to find the biggest savings on rail tickets in the UK and across Europe so would be great to hear what you think! :D

You can find a better clarity of infographic on our blog: https://loco2.com/blog/train-travel-infographic

Just one comment: the UK market is (I think) unique in offering significant discounts for walk-up return fares over singles, especially off-peak ones.

A footnote to the Manchester and Glasgow fares would make that clear without complicating the graphics. "For many UK journeys, walk-up return fares are only slightly more than the one-way fare" - would that cover it without misleading?

Thanks a lot for this! I've used Loco2 once or twice, it is really very good and I know you're fighting an uphill battle in terms of trying to integrate all these different European systems! I'll have a read and comment in a bit.

"Steer clear of buying tickets on the day in the UK" for medium or long-distance journeys.

I would write something like "UK domestic rail" next to the double arrows sign for clarity.

That's a really good point. A tricky one to convey though since you're right, more or less every other rail operator prices tickets one-way, and a return as 2 singles.

We've already published the infographic but will revisit and see if we can add a note along those lines. The best advice is probably that you shouldn't buy an Advance ticket until you know what the return price for a walk-up (anytime, off-peak as applicable) is for the dates you want.

Thanks for your feedback, we really appreciate it! :)

Looks good!

Also Advance tickets can be purchased up to 10 mins before on Cross Country I think.

Very useful and informative.

Not a criticism of your work, but of the system in general, but it would be really useful if TOCs could coordinate the release of their advance fares, and publish a calendar of what's going to be released and when. I know this page exists, but I'm damned if I've yet found a way to it from the National Rail homepage.

Even if it's an Advance ticket?

Good infographic Loco2 - and on a more general note much respect for the work you do (I know it's not for charity, but trying to offer a pan-European ticket booking engine must surely try the patience of a saint at times!).

One thing that isn't featured on the infographic is Railcards. Obviously the 16-25 and Senior but also the Two Together can be well worthwhile, even for just one trip. Of course there's also the problem of information overload!

I didn't know that so thanks for the tip!

It'll be interesting to see if this is rolled out to agents as well as the TOCs offering it on their own websites. Seems as though lots of new features and benefits are being offered on each TOCs own site only e.g. Cross Country waiving the £10 admin fee for exchanges of their own Advance tickets for customers who book through them, Virgin offers free WI-FI for direct customers etc.

I guess it's inevitable that they try to squeeze out agents like us, but it only makes things more complicated for customers which is the opposite of what people want as far as we can tell. It should be one rule for everyone!

I completely agree, it's crazy that it's so complicated! Who knows why they don't get their act together - can't imagine what the benefit is to TOCs for not adhering to a standard booking horizon. We wouldn't need a calendar if it was 3 calendar months across the board.

And they're getting out of date with the rest of Europe there too. Deutsche Bahn and Eurostar are now 180 days and others are considering following suit.

Thanks for the encouragement! You're right, we definitely feel like we're in an uphill battle sometimes. Good to know we're appreciated.

We omitted railcards on purpose since they're just so complicated. There's so much variation, exclusions etc that we couldn't make a good enough visual. We've save that for the next time!

Hi all,

Wanted to say thanks again for all the feedback about the infographic. We've now updated it to address the point raised by member 30907 - that returns are sometimes only £1 more than a single. https://loco2.com/blog/train-travel-infographic

And we're consider some of the ideas for other projects! :)

Advance fares on XC can be booked on the day - not just the day before - ah Ankleboots already mentioned that, but it's not been updated.
