Do the 442s have a core power bus with end-jumpers (if that's the right description)? If you coupled a coach with a diesel generator onboard up to a five or ten car set could it deliver power through a DC bus to the existing traction motors?

AFAIK there is a power train line to transfer power between the shoes and the motor coach. There used to be ETS sockets on each end but that is to supply hotel power only and not traction.

IIRC there are sockets for shed leads but these were on the MBLS (now the MBC).

Not much good for coupling on the front. Also you'd need one hell of a generator coach to supply that kind of power. It would need to supply 750V at 1600A to drive the motors alone at the same rating as they are on third rail (from standstill - this load will decrease with speed). That doesn't take into account compressors, lighting, heating, air con etc.

Caught one this morning from HHE to LBG, whilst I won't miss their poor timekeeping, temperamental doors and patchy aircon I will miss the space and comfort which make 319s and 700s feel like portakabins on wheels. :(

442410 & 442419 today on 1F82 07:12 Eastbourne to London Bridge.

Joined this at Wivelsfield, there was little or no heating on the carriage I boarded and when we arrived at London Bridge the guard apologised for the excessive heat and cold in different parts of the train. Evidently there was a delay at Lewes to eject an aggressive beggar although we arrived on time at London Bridge.

2402 & 2408 will form 1G33 12.32 Brighton-Ashford as far as Eastbourne today.

Cheers

AY

Now, this must be the most bizarre service the 442s have ever worked on the GTR network. I recall them working a special service from Brighton to Eastbourne just before Christmas, but for them to replace a 171! Those who were expecting a fairly packed 2 car must've received a very big shock!

Their ride is second to none almost feels like you are gliding when you are in the, perhaps because the coaches are raised more than most stock above the rails (or is that just an illusion?)

What's the plan for the marshlink then? Were there to be extra 170s from scotrail that are now staying put or were they originally intended for uckfields?

Or 319 hybrids if the experiement proves a success

The plan for Marshlink was set out plain and clear in the GTR timetable consultation:

* The extra 170s aren't coming from Scotrail.

At the time of writing, it is unlikely that there will be any additional diesel units available to strengthen the current services to three or four carriage trains.

* The Ashford service either gets cut at Eastbourne or Hastings with 377s doing the rest or the current service remains but with its current limited capacity.

We are aware that some people strongly support through journeys between Brighton and Ashford International however in its current form we are unable to address some of the significant crowding issues that ultimately limit the potential of growth throughout the region as passengers seek to avoid using the train.

Which option do you support?

* Operate longer electric trains between Brighton and Eastbourne with connections to and from a two carriage diesel train between Eastbourne and Ashford International.

* Operate longer electric trains between Brighton and Hastings with connections to and from a two carriage diesel train between Hastings and Ashford International

*Continue to operate through trains between Brighton and Ashford International with the understanding that current capacity issues on the route are unlikely to be addressed in the short and medium term.

But, it does beg the question as to what 170416-170420 were going to be used for if they had come as 170421-170424 have enabled the three Uckfield peak services to go to 10-car.

I agree with the ride quality, I'm real glad I did the ROG Poole tour. Perfectly smooth and silent, had the very front coach to myself on the down journey. 15 and 18 performed flawlessly throughout.

The other week a 442 ran Brighton to Eastbourne direct in service as a stock move.

I've just read in the RAIL magazine about the 442's going off lease. So will this mean some 377/5's will transfer to Southern after all?

i see now, the 8 377/2's coming from Thameslink will indirectly replace the 442's. RAIL magazine said 377/5's which got me confused but then I remembered they're all going to Southeastern (unless plans change again)

Assume that's changed until formally announced.

And not sure how 32x 377s going to SE comes from 23x 377/5 either.

I saw a 442 at East Croydon yesterday heading to London Bridge. This would have been around 17.45.
