Over the last few months I have taken a keen interest in pursuing a career as a train driver and so I have done quite a bit of internet searching. I came across this forum and have read through a lot of interesting threads and good advise, as well as motivating stories. However, I am currently struggling to find vacancies for a trainee train driver job, I did find one single job on virgins careers site a couple of months ago and I filled out the application, but unfortunately did not hear anything back. (I understand there were thousands of applicants for that job and I think I only saw the application quite late on).

I would like to ask how and where any successful applicants on here found the job listed? And if anyone knows how often they tend to come up?

I understand I am going to have to be patient and keep checking the TOCs recruitment sites, I am just looking to get a bit of a better idea of how others have managed to get their foot in the door themselves?

Register for the job updates on the Train Operating Companies (TOC) website and just check here every other day. Not much else you can do, apart from go and live a life whilst you're waiting.

Thanks, I have actually done that already for Virgin, Northern and Transpennine which I believe are the only ones operating close enough to me. (Blackpool/Preston)

What do you think about keeping an eye out for other roles such as conductor as a way in?

To be honest all you need is this forum lol. Once a trainee job is posted 9 times out of 10 somebody posts it up on this forum.

For a Cardiff based trainee train driver job would it just be Arriva Wales and possibly Freightliner? Any other companies to keep an eye on?
