88s and more 68s on the way so not unexpected that some of the older loco would get retired.

Most of the 68s are going to TPE and other operators where LHCS is replacing/supplementing DMUs. So I don't think that DRS get much of a net increase in locos.

Someone on Facebook was trying to say the 20s would be following in the next few months due to reliability but how true this is remains to be seen

Some 20s would need to be retained for the Yorkshire RHTT circuits surely?

But will they though? Are the 20s being used this year as DRS originally planned - as 68s seem to have found their way on the RHTT circuits this year as well.

I believe there is a viaduct that can only take class 20s in multiple, I may be wrong though.

Thing is, demand for 68s on other work will only increase. 15 of the eventual 32 currently either in existence or on order are spoken for on LHCS work and someone elsewhere has suggested that TPE may eventually need as many as 19, although that'd be some way off.

I'd imagine, though I don't know exactly how these things work, that it'd serve DRS better keeping some older locos just for stuff like that and using the 68s on Tesco/Chiltern/TPE/Scotrail etc etc.

Not trying to shoot you down, just thought I'd point it out! :)

I think they have managed to get exemption for heavier locos for RHTT purposes only this year and are hoping to continue on that basis.

the 68's have been on the Yorkshire circuits this year along with 37's and 20's. The 20's seem to have been on the circuit via Wakey and the 68's on the Harrogate/West Yorkshire circuit. Some pics on my flickr...........

If they can use the 68's wil lthe 20's have a future with DRS?

Reported

37601 to Colas
37602 37607 37612 to HNRC
37609 to Europhoenix
37688 to D05 Preservation

Pinch of salt required for 37602/609 as they weren't on the original tender list. Others TBC and 37610 37667 unaccounted for.
37688 confirmed however

I would fancy a 20 and a 37 but got nowhere to store it
Maybe in a few years if I buy a house I could put it in the garden
Maybe if we all chipped in we could start a scheme where we donate locos to various preservation railways

To what end? Preserved railways have limited storage space, and the cost of purchasing a loco is only the tip of a large financial iceberg; there's then the cost of overhauling, maintaining and operating the loco in perpetuity. 'Heritage' diesels of classes 20 and 37 are already well represented in preservation, what is lacking is sufficient labour and funding to keep them all going.

A number of heritage railways have more than enough diesels as it is and your suggestion of everybody chipping in is just a preservation group and there are already dozens, if not hundreds, of them.

602 609 is apparently wibble

However all other seem to be correct and 47813 to ROG. Can't see any reason why WCRC or LSL would want 37610/37667. Neither have heat and the latter has scrap tyres. New wheelsets and a heavy exam each required. Of use to 610 could be of use to Colas with it's 90mph but both more likely to be EP/HNRC/ROG than anything else.

I shall brace myself for being proved wrong though...

Let's face it, DRS are looking to offload all of their 37s in the medium to long term. This will be an ongoing process as new traction is delivered to them.

I can't see a 73/9-type rebuild programme being envisaged for the 37s now, as the need for Type 3 traction is now pretty limited.

Really? Only 12 months ago they were refurbing 37/4's that looked certain for scrap.
