I hate pork pies.

I've started this thread because I don't understand why its assumed that the standard food of choice for the pub goer is a pork pie. They are disgusting with that disgusting jelly that makes me feel ill just thinking about it.

An ale house I regularly frequent used to stock a collection of pork pies, scotch eggs and sandwiches, and I used to partake of a lovely scotch egg with mustard.

I arrive today to find that they've stopped doing everything except pork pies.

What is this fixation with pork pies in this country. I don't care what wonderful ingredients you've put in them, or whether there's a layer of apple on the top. They're disgusting.

I also share your dislike of pork pies, though I don't think there is a fixationwith them in this country, except perhaps among some drinking establishments and some of their clientèle?

I don't mind a pork pie, but I'm with you on the jelly front. I don't understand what's nice about having jelly in it. The ones without jelly are fine!

I like pork pies but not the tiny individual ones, the pastry on them is to thin, soft and soggy and the filling is bland. I don't mind the jelly, you can always scrape it off.

Perhaps it's a stereotype about the clientele!

The real pain is that this is an establishment where I used to partake of a scotch egg regularly. But I've come across plenty in my time that seem to think that the pork pie is the be all and end all.

Pubs and "food"....

Pork Scratchings. What's that all about? Do people like eating what's left after you've sharpened a pencil? Yurgh....!

That'll start an argument! Meanwhile, back on topic, like most snacks sold in pubs don't pork pies contain a fair bit of salt, to make you want to drink more?

If they offer a scotch egg, they can contain as much salt as they want as far as I'm concerned.

That's odd, must be autocorrect.

I'm sure you meant to say "I fully support the wide availability of the greatest and best food available"

I neither love nor hate pork pies, but I've probably visited but one pub in my life where they were on offer.

If you drop a Pork Pie from the top of The Chard, before it reaches the ground a Yorkshireman will have stuck his hand out of the window and caught it.

If it were Lancashire, and a meat'n'potato pie, we wouldn't drop one off a building....

Rob, would you not even make an exception if it was of the good old British Rail Catering/Travellers Fare variety of growler sold over the buffet counter of a 4-BEP? ;) :D

I've a suggestion for British airlines to make money - when you have had two or three weeks in some hot and sticky resort where food is basically chips with anything that's been freshly caught that's been running round the car-park, what price the smell of a cooking pork pie on the flight home? Or meat/potato pasty?? And what do you get for your £5.50? Curled up sandwich containing weeds. C'mon, Micheal....

Really ? There's too many where they only offer pork pies in my experience.

Is it's a regional thing? I've never found a pub selling them at all!

Down here scampi fries or pork scratchings are the pub snack of choice.

I like a good Scotch egg, the problem being finding one. Most are rubbery, the egg must have been one of those Chinese hundred-year-old ones and the sausage meat is of the lowest possible quality. I imagine if you threw one at someone it might kill them.

Commercial pork pies, though, have improved in recent years imo, so long as you don't go for the 'basics' range.

On the subject of Scotch Eggs, in junior school (late 80's) they used to serve them with a slight twist, in between the egg and sausage meat was a very thin layer of cheese.

I've never seen or had them since, and anyone I mention them to gives me a funny look. But they did exist!

I agree, but even then if buying from a supermarket it has to be a Melton Mowbray one.

A one from Taylors in Darlington however, they cannot be beaten. The daily queue for when they are coming out of the oven suggests i'm not alone in thinking that!

Pork pies wouldn't be at the top of my list of favourite foods
Personally i also find the jelly in pork pies disgusting but aside from the jelly the pork pies are actually rather nice.

Alas, the BEP's had all gone when I was there. I loved the Travellers Fare burger at Ashford (with mustard and ketchup) but they didn't bother with pork pies (not Travellers Fare ).

Pubs should serve nuts and, at a push, crisps!

Yes, I remember the 1980's school dinner cheesy scotch egg. I'd pay to have one of those, they were delicious!

I'm with Yorksrob on this one. I can't stand the things. The jelly, the bland lifeless meat in them, the thickness of that horrible pastry.
The only way I'd want to deal with one if it was coming towards me would be if I had a cricket bat in my hand and I could smash it for six, no doubt taking a few bystanders out with the sheer stodgy weight of the thing.

Instead of waiting on the platform of Wigan N.W for my connecting train to Liverpool Lime St on a recent trip, I took a short walk to the "Wigan Central" bar. Situated just a few minutes walk away in an under viaduct arch, the bar is
home to the finest real ales, plenty of raiway memorabilia AND award winning pork pies from an artisan in nearby Standish. If pork pies could be guaranteed to taste as good as this one, I'd eat them much more often !

If you're ever in Wigan , the " Wigan Central" is a great place for a refreshing pint, with or without a pork pie !
