ECML wires were put up on the cheap - that's the issue more than the 91s (or the other locos which also bring them down - just usually a 91 as their the main electric loco that uses the ECML...)
I think that the only way around this is to use alternative traction on the ECML to rule out any fault of the class 91s.

So in the next few weeks if the TOCs use 86s, 87s, the 89 from Barrow Hill, 90s, and some 37s/47s/50s/56s/60s/Deltics/pairs of 20s/A4s then it will help to narrow the investigation down!

Or catch the 19.06 from Kings Cross direct to Lincoln

That service is cancelled for today unfortunately.

Is the damaged section near to the section(s) that have previously had damage?

Looking at the photo, if the 800s been in service, would that have been the sort of damage where they could have isolated the section of OLE, secured the pan down, switched to diesel mode and got the train to the next station. Then offloaded the passengers and park up in the first available siding?

When I was delayed by an OLE fault a while back, it was a 365 that took the wire down near St Neots.

It does seem that it's the section around Retford that has had more than its fair share of these problems in the last half year or so. As someone else hinted, maybe the repairs have been failing...

What is it with this stretch of line? This is the fourth time in six months that I know of. I know the ECML has a poor reputation for OLE reliability generally but this seems to be turning in to a problem hot spot.
That section does seem to have it's problems with the OHLE. In the past, it used to be around Sandy and Hitchin that were prone to dewirements

Incident stopped the Shadow Chancellor getting to the recording of tonight's Question Time.

Should save Labour a few votes.

Joke. Joke.

Got to Leeds about an hour ago, there was a lot of passengers waiting for the 20:45 VTEC to Doncaster (change for London services) to be announced platform wise!

Felt sorry for them, clearly another bad day on the ECML.

do you guys think things will be any better under Azumas? a lot of the problems on the ECML involve infrastructure and increasingly, it seems, Retford...

I'm sure the fine users of Great Northern will be willing to donate their 387s to the cause

I wonder if they put coasting in place for a few days through the area like last September?

Until someone forgets and raises the pan too early, leading to TWO sections of knitting down...

I'm no OLE expert so please forgive me!

What is the cause this re-occurrence? Is it the pantograph pulling the wires down or poor installation of overhead lines? Or a combination of both?!

Oh dear :D

Suppose you could jump on the A52 at Grantham and then the A14 and attack Lincoln that way?
They must've moved the A14...

I would do but I'm in Ware at the moment and commuting from Stevenage! I usually get the 1740 Stevenage - Peterborough, which connects with the 1803 from Lincoln. I'm meant to be driving to Stevenage so I'll probably just drive home, attempting to avoid the A1 chaos at Newark. Thanks for the information though.
Alternatively turn off the A1 at Colsterworth and join the High Dyke (Ermine Street), through Ancaster and then onto Pottergate to come out on the A607 at Wellingore/Navenby.

That's my secondary route, but I usually go for the other because it means less time stuck behind potential lorries with no way to overtake on tiny roads!

If it was an 800 it would probably continue in service in diesel mode. An 801 would 'limp home' on diesel to a convenient location.

we used to have lots of problems along the Grantham to Retford stretch, then when N/R took over from Railtrack, Network Rail introduced Local worksite Inspectors, who checked the workmanship of the area maintenance staff "contractors", each inspector worked on his/her discipline (Power supplies, Telecom, Signals, Track)
it took time but after the first year the workmanship & reliability improved, but the day we took the "contractors" in house all the Local Worksite inspectors lost their jobs
one day we can't trust these "contractors" the next day they are totally trust worthy
now when we have incidents who checks-- its the area maintenance guys supervisor, will he drop his men in it ?
as a lad the older hands told me lots of things, here's a few about maintenance
"every new guy shaves a bit off how he maintains the equipment, so over the years standards drop"
"when I joined maintenance standards were up here now there down here"
"if you are taught by a good bloke you have half a chance, if taught by a bad one you have no chance"

and the most telling was a senior manager & his head supervisor were talking about the interviews they just held for a leading hands post, "these blokes don't even know what an SI is for" HA HA HA HA, I said "But they have worked for you for years" "yes but their useless HA HA HA"

Just a reminder that blind people (and anyone else who can't read text from images, or for whom the image won't load) won't be able to understand this, so a text alternative needs to be provided. I will edit your post to include a text alternative now. ( http://www.web-accessibility.org.uk/web-accessibility-for-blind-people.html is worth a read)

Back to the topic, it's unclear how Network Rail can be renationalised, and it's also unclear if this would include upgrading every pice of sub-standard overhead line equipment (which would mean most of the East Coast Main Line would need to be re-done) to acceptable standards, or if they are suggesting de-wiring the entire ECML?

(I suspect it was just something said randomly to sound good, without any actual thought!)
