I'm just wondering what people think about the best TOC to work for is ? I'm looking at this from a drivers point of view, what makes it good or bad feel from to say what you like. Also I'm interested what part of the country people think is a good place to work. I'm just curious what people think. I already am a driver this is purely to see what people think. Many thanks.

Whilst i don't work for a TOC myself i do have many friends that do and from what i have heard South West Trains are quite a good company to work for. They seem to treat their staff fairly well compared to some other TOCs. From what i have heard Chiltern Railways are also quite a good company to work for as well. I would personally recommend avoiding working for any Govia owned TOC. I haven't heard anything good about them.

It's interesting I've heard the opposite about South West Trains so just goes to show a lot if it is about personal perception

I have two driver friends at GoVia owned TOCs and both love it, too.

Metro or Mainline. Nothing else really matters. The TOC is just another name on my payslip. I've worked under 3 different franchises and nothing really differs between them. Might get a better discount if your TOC own multiple franchises but even then some don't share benefits.

It also depends on the depot as work/management vary widely.

I work at a "slippers" depot, ie nice and quiet, love it

Its much more down to personal perception and local management as opposed to which European state operator owns the franchise.

Than being said Greater Anglia (Abellio) do seem to actually care about the engagement and happiness of their staff at a corporate level which is nice.

I've been with South West Trains for 5 and a half years, both as a Guard and now Driver. I feel I have been treated well by the company and don't have any major complaints at all. You will always get people who like to moan, from my experience they tend to be people who have worked on the railway for a long time and long for the BR days when things were supposedly so much better. I'm just apprehensive about the forthcoming franchise announcement, hoping Stagecoach keep it.

I work for a Govia TOC no problems with the toc but management is rather poor but there are some depots that given the cushiness of their work it doesnt matter that the management is poor.

If the TOC changes hands then the local managers generally stay the same. Senior Directors change but that's about it in my experience.

Very true so nothing really changes, no wonder it all just stays the same new uniform same old people upstairs, but I don't want to turn this into a bit of a rant I am genuinely interested in people's opinion on areas and TOCS .

On the local level change would be very gradual I'm guessing, but certainly with the SWT franchise in particular I'm thinking there is scope for the new TOC to take things in a different direction. The role of the guards, which depots do which routes, even the approach to customer service which I personally feel Stagecoach make more of effort with than some other companies. The general feel of working for the franchise would change. I am very open to the idea that my fears are completely unfounded however!
