It shouldn't *need* policing.

Indeed, what exactly makes people think it is OK to play tablets etc out loud?

It is a breach of the Railway Byelaws to do so to the annoyance of others (and it's near inevitable that it *will* annoy someone). There need to be some prominent prosecutions to make it clear this is not acceptable at all.

Get headphones.

that simply isnt going to happen (despite the spotterish desire shown by this board to wave a copy of the byelaws and run everyone contravening off to chokey) - It isnt worth the time, cost and effort.

but yes - get headphones!

Quite (and quiet!).

The more no-body does anything about it, the more people will think its OK. I'm often tempted to start singing out loud if someone near me starts playing a tablet out loud but guess who would be the most likely in that scenario to get spoken to?

Whilst I am sure none of you will have ever done anything to annoy other people I am not sure I am that perfect. Judge not, that ye be not judged.

OBVIOUSLY gross behvaiour should be challenged but often threads like this merely highlight the British middle class snob angered that someone common looking dared to talk in their presence or that they were subjected to some minor inconvenience that is part and parcel of using (and there is a clue here) public transport.

It's not really though is it?

It's just people wanting other people to behave in a way that doesn't interfere with their comfort. It's the bedrock of civilisation.

so do I - but, surely, you have to expect a certain level of difference when people are put together. Values, ethics and views differ. Perhaps you might be seen as a crusty old stuffed shirt for wanting to object to, say, someones phone call when that wouldn't really bother me. I might want to complain about someones music which might not bother you etc

My point is that what we see reported here as egregious breaches of the unwritten code of Britishness are, essentially, minor inconveniences. The linked article ( satirical or otherwise) is a case in point. Here the author complained about common people daring to talk or have a drink in his presence coupled with a few minor issues of inconvenience.

And who is going to enforce it?

He's very funny, but I always got the feeling he was joking-not-joking about a lot of it. And I'm certainly not convinced the Daily Wail do satire ;)

If you hear him on the radio, he does Steve Wright on R2 reasonably regularly, it becomes apparent very rapidly that he's sending himself up and it isn't serious in the way that it's said.

I think there is a more subtle point in that he genuinely wants people to be better mannered overall, but he's chosen to make his case in this way.

I've started listening to Steve occasionally, i'll have to listen out for this guy.

In all honesty though, I couldn't give a monkeys whether the guy in the article is serious or not. What I have issue with is what is written in the OP and why the thread was made in the first place. That this upgrade facility should be reviewed/removed because they don't want to mingle with the hoi polloi.

I've taken advantage of weekend first many times when with the kids, they are perfectly well behaved but I can just imagine the look of horror on the OP's face when we enter their carriage.

You cannot enforce anything, since you are just a member of the public.

You don't know my role, and in any case, if I am annoyed by others' behaviour, I will take steps to address the situation, ranging from moving (if it's a carriage full of drunken louts) to berating the offender, and many steps in between. I lump that under 'enforcement'.

I once had a wonderful trip on VTWC in First class after buying an advanced ticket for a early Saturday morning train. Carlisle United were playing at Wembley and the train manager declassified First Class to deal with overcrowding (this was pre-11 car days) - it was fair to say that the supporters in my carriage had already finished off their first crate of larger.

You have stated in the past you have no role on the railway, therefore you can only act as a member of the public, and can enforce nothing.
Berating anybody could easily misfire.
You could be heading for BIG trouble!

If things were so bad, but you had an advance ticket with restrictions, could you ask the guard to let you off at the next stop, and get the next following train (which might be quieter) let you ride without penalty?

Rule one of travelling especially at weekends is check the football fixtures. Most supporters are okay but it does mean busier trains.

Tip for tomorrow - avoid Chester - Wrexham and Bidston - Wrexham from 08:00 till noon and reverse direction from 2pm to 4pm

Having a drink and being civilised is fine.

Having a drink and being loud and boorish, using obscene language, isn't.
lol

Many here would consuder the temperance movement to be too soft when it comes to drink!

Of course you are right and i agree but many here have unrealistic expectatuons about other people and/or dont really understand what they are seeing - they seem to expect a silent mobile library where they can contemplate the latest roger ford column in modern rrailways! ;)

Chippenham to Bath Spa, which are in 2 zones, single first class fare is £13.10, return £17.10. standard £5.70 single, £5.80 return

Does that mean the upgrade is £15 in itself, or is it £7.50, just from Chippenham to Bath? I found the English used on the website somewhat opaque. 'Number of zone boundaries passed through' would be better expressed. So in your example you cross from zone B to Zone C. I was astonished at the zoning. One could go all the way from Hereford to Brighton, for £7.50 extra in first class, apparently, because one does not cross a zone boundary. However, there is no through train that does that, so can one carry over one's upgrade from one train to another (in this case at TM and probably Portsmouth and indeed from one TOC to another)?

I've never used it, but, always read it that it's the number of zones you go through, if it were the number of boundaries you cross it would be a number of journeys without a cost as one doesn't cross a boundary e.g Swindon to Chippenham.

In your example, no. There is no FC on the Portsmouth service. And no, definitely not TOC-interchangeable. GWR only.

I don't even mind drunk and loud, but when people make others feel uncomfortable e.g. drunk blokes chatting women up who don't want to be being chatted up (or, to be fair, vice versa), or harrassing passengers who aren't interested in getting dragged into drunken antics, or when vandalism etc starts (chucking seat covers out of windows, pulling the emergency door release for a laugh etc), the line has been crossed.

I've had plenty of entertaining train rides with drinkers. I even ended up on a table with 3 others who had been pre-drinking for a night out including on the train last time I went on the Cambrian, and they even shared it around, got a couple of glasses of not-too-bad red out of them! :)
