I hope this is in the right part of the forum? Mods - Please move it if not.

Is there such a thing as online and downloadable UK rail maps. Not a Quail persa but something more akin to Trackatlas of Mainland Britain but online and with it being able to be downloaded onto a mobile device like a tablet? Something similar to the excellent Schweers and Wall type of atlas which also shows closed line.
I have had look on Google and there does not seem to be anything at all like this.
Thanks.

Yes I was aware of that one but had forgotten about so thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately it doesn't do an offline version as far as I can see and that is really what I am after so it will be on my tablet and I don't have to worry about requiring wifi to have a look at it. Thanks again though.

Many thanks for that.
Again not really what I am after. If you have seen the Schweers and Wall series of European maps that would be the best format that I am after. They have done a European map but not gone into as much detail as they do for their Country maps.
The reason for asking was when I am out and about on the trains I am often fascinated by seeing lines that go off here and there and then wondering where on earth they actually go to? For example I travelled on the line from Nottingham towards Hucknall and saw what appeared to be a line going off towards god knows where. If I had a downloaded map on my tablet I could have quickly seen that it was the old track to the old Calverton Colliery.
And then the other day I was going through Battersea Park and on the left saw a buffer stop and a line then going off to the left. Again I could not remember where this went to and had to wait until I had wifi to be able to find out it was the line to Wandsworth Road. I suppose I am after too much detail or information and that is not yet ready as an online or downloadable format?

Ah that's more like it. That is definitely something like I am looking for. Now I have just got to work out a way of being able to possibly download it.
Thanks for the heads up on this one.

D'oh. Didn't see that link. So many thanks as that is exactly what I am looking for. Now just need the rest of the country to be done.

That is something more like it. Shame though that it is not being updated. Something similar to that is really what I am after so thanks for that. Just a shame it doesn't have the old defunct lines shown to.
Many thanks though for your help.

Have you looked at using an OpenStreetMap transport layer? You can download the data but you would have to do some work to get it in the right format and host it offline.

Blimey. Er no. One of the reason I asked originally is because I am a tad computer illiterate. I know how to download a PDF to a tablet and that is about it. I would love to be able to do what you stated but I would not have any idea where to start. I like your maps but again it's the off line part that I am after.

The version I downloaded has the closed and dismantled lines on it.

I did actually upload a small update recently! Would love to do more on it, it's just a matter of finding the hours in the day...

http://www.systemed.net/atlas/ is the URL (the plus.com one is some old hosting that I didn't realise was still extant).

Thanks for that info, and thanks for a great map, it's much appreciated and I'm glad to know that it's still being updated.

Edit: That's quite a substantial update (from the version I was using before). Thanks!

And for me too -- the thanks are strongly seconded!

Thanks for the guidance about the new URL - I'd been using the old one as well. It's an excellent map, I keep a PDF of it on my phone for reference when I come across old railway alignments etc. Many thanks for the work you've evidently put in on it!

No idea if these are suitable for mobiles, but here are some on-line maps that include railways (including some non-UK locations).

https://sites.google.com/site/keymapsgb/

http://www.bueker.net/trainspotting/maps.php

And if you have a Windows computer you create off-line copies of maps (or sections thereof) by using the "Print Screen" key. This only saves the part that is visible on the screen, but you can then paste that image into imaging software or many word processors - and the save the result in file formats readable on mobiles or elsewhere.

That's a great map! I like that, thanks.

Sorry if this is obvious (you've probably seen it already), but the National Rail "all stations" map is one I use quite frequently. It's more like a giant tube map, and it doesn't show closed lines, but it is useful as a searchable map of every station in the country:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/static/documents/content/nationalrailoperatorsmapZoom.pdf

I use that map a lot a lot on my phone. Easy to to use and zoom in on.

Thanks everyone for the above suggestions, I'm hoping to make a 6 hour journey Cornwall-London bearable by peering at the railway as it goes by, so these will be very helpful.

How well do Traksy and OTT work on phones? Probably more useful for me than the OP, as I bought far too much monthly data with my new phone, but might be useful.

What I do is follow the route on the map on my phone, or drop a pin to look it up later when I have wifi.

Tracksy could be better on a phone but it's functional realtimetrains works fine in a phone.

Can I just say that I use your atlas more than ANY OTHER, for the following reasons:

(a) works offline - i.e. is a PDF download
(b) covers south of Manchester - my area of interest (mainly)
(c) is a mix of current/former lines

Really, can't express how much I've used your PDF over the years - it's brilliant. I wish you had a "PayPal Donate" button on your site because I would use it to say "thank you".

Thanks for all the updates on this topic. I have downloaded the updated Adlestrop map together with the National Rail one. My tablet is only accessible on wifi so I use Dropbox with the pdf downloaded so viewable offline. That was why I asked about it. I do have Traksy and it is very good on the phone but obviously it eats up the battery more than the data.
Again thanks to everyone for all the updates.

That Bueker site is amazing, it's a shame he stopped updating them after 2010
