Well then I assume that you can understand that the magnitude and scale of the attack will mean that the forensic examination is going to take time - hence they're not going to reopen the station until they've completed that work.

It would be helpful if the authorities explained why the station needs to be kept shut for so long. And not just by saying "for forensic examination". Why the focus on the station?

Because the entire area is a massive crime scene.

The police never discuss operations - it's a case of having to accept that they have their job to do and get on with it.

The bomb went off in the foyer between the station and the arena. I imagine trains and passengers litterally next to / above the site of a terrorist attack risks contamination and also because Network Rail haven't had time to make any neccessary repairs.

I suspect the Metrolink line could reopen sooner than the station, with trams going through the station and not stopping. This would coniderably ease the pressure on public transport. The Metro tracks are the furthest away from the attack so it would make sense as a stage 1 of a phased reopening. No news from Metrolink about tomorrow. Either they will run todays emergency timetable or if they are allowed to, they may reopen Exchange Square as a terminus for East Didsbury services to allow normal frequencies through Cornbrook to St Peters Square to be resumed.

Three reasons really.
First the station is within the perimeter around the crime zone, paramedics treated some people in the station on the new access bridge, forensics have been using the station as working space and thirdly its suggested the bomber arrived by train so they would want to check those possible forensic sources too.

As mentioned earlier, Victoria remains closed today (24/05). Details of services and replacement buses have now been published:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/163668.aspx

Following the tragic events that occurred at Manchester Arena on Monday night, Manchester Victoria station will remain closed and no trains will operate to or from the station, due to its proximity to the arena.
Manchester Victoria is expected to remain closed until at least the end of today, but may have to remain closed for several days. Please continue to check this page for further updates.

Trains will not run to / from and through Manchester Victoria. Trains will be diverted, cancelled or start / terminate at alternative stations.
You are advised to AVOID the Manchester Victoria / Manchester Arena area. Please follow instructions from staff and emergency services.
Advice for Northern customers:

Northern will operate services on the following routes to replace those which would normally call at Manchester Victoria:

Leeds – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Rochdale. A replacement bus service will run between Rochdale and Manchester Piccadilly calling at all intermediate stations.
Huddersfield – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Stalybridge. A replacement bus service will run between Stalybridge and Manchester Piccadilly calling at Ashton-under-Lyne.
Liverpool Lime Street – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Manchester Oxford Road.
Liverpool Lime Street – Manchester Airport: A reduced service will run on this route.
Southport – Manchester Airport: These services will start and terminate at Manchester Piccadilly and run to Southport via Bolton, calling additionally at all stations between Bolton and Manchester Piccadilly.
Kirkby – Manchester Victoria: Trains will run between Wigan Wallgate and Kirkby only.
Wigan Wallgate - Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Salford Central.
Blackpool North – Hazel Grove: The majority of these through services are cancelled.
Blackpool North – Manchester Victoria: Trains will start and terminate at Manchester Oxford Road.
Blackpool North – Manchester Airport: A reduced service will run on this route.
Clitheroe – Manchester Victoria: Trains will run between Clitheroe and Bolton only.
**
You may use your ticket on Metrolink, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains and Virgin Trains via any reasonable route. Metrolink are currently unable to call at Manchester Victoria
You may also use Stagecoach buses between Stalybridge and Manchester on routes 231, 216, 236 and 237.

Normal services will run into and out of Manchester Piccadilly to and from all south Manchester destinations.

Advice for TransPennine Express customers:

Trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle will be diverted to start / terminate at Manchester Piccadilly, not running between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street. Passengers should use alternative trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street.
You may use your ticket on CrossCountry, Virgin Trains East Coast, East Midlands Trains and Northern via any reasonable route.
TransPennine Express services between Scarborough and Liverpool Lime Street will operate as normal.

TPE Advance ticket holders may travel on any TransPennine Express service today.

TransPennine Express customers wishing to re-evaluate their travel plans may apply for a full refund, without any administration fee, on all ticket types.

Advice for customers travelling to and from Manchester with other train companies

CrossCountry are allowing customers with pre-booked tickets to and from Manchester to travel at any time until Sunday 28 May. Please travel as close to the booked train time as possible on the alternative travel day. Customers booked to travel to or from Manchester in the next 12 weeks, and decide not to travel, may apply for a full refund without any administration fee on all ticket types.

Arriva Trains Wales will be accepting specific Advance tickets from Manchester dated for Tuesday 23 or Wednesday 24 May for travel at any times from today until Thursday 25 May inclusive. If you had an Advance purchase ticket to get home from the concert then please don’t worry about it not being honoured on other trains. Please stick to your booked train time where possible if you do not wish to travel on the original booked date.

Considering its Victoria that's shut and its effecting services that normally use the station it raises a few questions:

1> Why do the majority of Blackpool North-Hazel Grove services need to be cancelled?

2> Why can't Southport-Manhester Airport services still serve Manchester Airport?

3> Why are services on both Liverpool Lime Street-Manchester Airport and Blackpool North-Manchester Airport being reduced in frequency?

I only ask these question as the above services dont use Victoria Station so why should passengers on the above services be inconvenienced?

I can't speak for Hazel Grove specifically, but there aren't enough paths through Deansgate/Oxford Road/P13/14 at Piccadilly and v.v. to allow everything to run plus Victoria's services.

Liverpool already had 7tph to Manchester, so losing two isn't any real inconvenience. I'm on the 0612 Liv-Ncl which has however been rerouted via Piccadilly. Also delayed by 8 due to 'congestion' through Picc, even at 0645 in the morning.

Southport pax can go via Liverpool, or take the other train per hour to Manchester, and there are 8tph between Manchester and the Airport anyway, so a part-cancellation here and there isn't any real inconvenience in the grand scheme of things.

I can imagine that the Southport to Airport train being curtailed at Piccadilly is due to it losing time by calling additionally at Moses Gate, Farnworth and Kearsley.

For some reason they are calling at Clifton as well. This station has its best service for years. Many also calling at additional stations between Wigan and Southport so will lose a lot of time. Hence not going to airport.

They've diverted the Blackpool-Victoria and Liverpool-Victoria stoppers to Oxford Road, which means they arrive at the wrong time to run through to Hazel Grove/the Airport, while due to the diversions two other services through Deansgate have to be sacrified as there aren't enough paths for two additional services.

Services are running between the Airport and Blackpool every hour. Although, one this morning started short at Piccadilly 40 minutes late due to a train fault.

According to my partner who is at Piccadilly now, no trains are now running between Piccadilly and Oxford Road. Something or nothing?

Resolved; residual delays.
Police were apparently searching premises next to the railway.
I imagine everybody is on high alert at the moment.

I cant see why through services cant run through the Victoria without stopping. For example,Blackpool North to Huddersfield,at least passengers could board and alight at Salford Central.

Is the reason not blindingly obvious to you?

In case you happen to have missed it two days ago there was a suicide bombing there. Unsurprisingly GMP, MI-5 and a heap of other security services are no doubt going over the scene and anything that could even vaguely be related to it with a fine tooth comb. I'm sure they really don't care how long it takes as long as they get every last bit.

As to telling the general public what is going on again, you may have missed the suicide bomb and subsequent investigation. With 5 arrests already having happened and maybe more to come surely its obvious that the authorities are going to be vague with the details as to not give anyone a hint they are on to them.

Its shocking you could even complain about the handling of a station closure given whats happened. Once again my estimation of the human race continues to spiral into oblivion.

New estimate is that the station will remain closed until Monday.

Evidenced by TPE relaxing advance purchase tickets on journeys to Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road until end of day on Sunday.

Probably because it's part of the crime scene as well as safety checks being required before reopening.

Whilst the bomb wasn't in that part of the crime scene specifically there could be power cables and other infrastructure that may have been located in the blast area that need checking.

The arena sits above parts of the station does it not? Is it structurally safe?

If that access area is closed for investigation are there sufficient emergency exits available?

Then there is the forensics investigation. Did the bomber arrive by train? If so is the unit they arrived on still in the station? Did they go to the toilets in the station etc etc? All that will need swept for clues and so on.

In the meantime are the police using parts of the station for officer duties during the investigation?

I'd imagine on the grounds of safety and security they would prefer not to have the local stopper to Blackpool passing through contaminating the crime scene and all the passengers gawping at what's going on.

There are already scheduled engineering works this coming weekend with a full shutdown through Bolton Saturday-Monday and partial shutdown on Tuesday. I'd be expecting a rewrite soon that the rail replacement services planned to run from Victoria will start at Piccadilly or Salford Central instead.

Possibly related to the disruption, the Brindle Heath "binliner" service has just arrived in Eccles.

Wow to some of the comments here are unbelieveable.

Large parts of the station were used as triage areas etc. The scene is not pleasant so how about we don't send through trains full of passengers to look at it.

Considering that the entire area around Man Vic is a crime scene, why would anyone in their right mind decide to send trains through non stop - it'll contaminate the area plus I don't think anyone would want to see blood stains and dead bodies on the platform. Every inch of the station and the arena above will be scanned again and again for evidence until the police investiations have concluded.

OK Metrolink services are passing though, but has GMP errected a fence to shield off the area?

Unless Metrolink are running a different service to the one which has been advertised on their website since first thing yesterday they aren't operating trams through Victoria non-stop. The Bury to Altrincham service has been suspended altogether, other trams from Bury and trams from Rochdale are terminating short of Victoria while East Didsbury trams have been diverted to Piccadilly.

I'm not sure where the suggestion of Metrolink running non-stop through Victoria has come from but it's not been mentioned on either the Metrolink or TfGM sites.

Not according to everything I have seen. They may be running through empty to set up service on the other side but certainly not in service.

Indeed. We don't know if the closure is solely down to the police investigation or if the station is currently unsafe to enter regardless of whether or not the police have done their work.

Unquestionably the police investigations justify the closure and will take some time. that we have to accept.

I also hope we could have some basic politeness in our discussion.

Wow, such animosity.

To those castigating me for daring to enquire why the station needs to be closed for so long, did it not occur to you that:

- not everyone knows that, apparently, the concert venue and the station are the same building (thanks to Chrism20 for the info in his post)

- nor that the station was used as a triage area (thanks to YorkshireBear for that)?

Yeah tram service on Bury line are still terminate at Queens Road and Rochdale/Oldham line still terminate at Central Park/Monsall. There is replacement bus service running from Queens Road and Central Park to Piccadilly so tram passengers can use that instead of local buses.

Watching North West news last night I notice Balloon st (where tram run to Shudehill) and part of Corporation st (where tram run into Victoria and Exchange Square) is still closed so trams wouldn't be allowed through Victoria Station until them roads re-opened even then TFGM probably don't want trams running through Victoria Station while station is still crime scene.
