Where can you do that? At the moment, the only place I've heard of is Pret a Manger, which is a shame because 1) they're too posh to come to North Wales, and 2) I can't imagine spending over £30 on sandwiches (even at their prices).
I stumbled across this last week and it's supposedly a majority of places offering contactless.

Come to think of it, I've seen the odd place offer contactless when it's over £30 but I just assumed it was an error so never bothered.

Will need to pay attention in Tesco next time I spend more than £30 then and see if they do offer it. The only place I've used it (completely forgot about this when I posted above!) was in the Apple store itself - felt rather odd paying £150 with your phone.

Tesco, Booths (Easy to rack up £30>), quite a few pubs I've been in, Select Morrisons stores, Apple, COOP, PC World (Select stores), Some railway ticket offices.

A lot of places don't realise they can take >£30 on Apple pay, sometimes you're better off just trying it.

I've personally done it in Tesco's, M&S, Yo Sushi, and Boots.

If you see the Apple and Android logos on the terminal, it should be possible for payments above £30. Indeed, if the machine even invites such payments when the amount is over £30 it should work.

But some places have stickers saying they can take them when they can't. If you ask, they say it's fine but only for £30. In which case you're not really using Android or Apple Pay.

I accept shop staff not understanding the difference though.

Can't judge on other shops. But i know for our Card Machines (Coop, Mid Counties) as it least my store. As soon as you go above £30 Contactless (Including Apple & Android Pay) are no longer usable.

For understanding it, keep myself up to date for what is happening etc, or at least try to.

You can pay over £30 in Sainsbury's as well- I paid £38 with Apple Pay no problem.

Yes, and Waitrose too. John Lewis still can't take contactless at all, which is bizarre. Their terminals are capable too, but - like Sainsbury's - they would appear to need an update.

The £30 limit doesn't apply to Apple/Android Pay transactions but your phone needs to be unlocked for higher value transactions (i.e. your phone PIN must be entered), while for lower value transactions it just needs the screen to be on.

I fail to see the difference on Apple Pay? For any transaction to go through you must verify with your fingerprint, which is also used in lieu of a pin to unlock your phone. Therefore you are using exactly the same authorisation twice for one transaction.

There isn't a difference for Apple Pay, all transactions are verified the same way.

By the way if you double tap the button quickly when the screen is locked you can "pre authorise" for a short period.

Does your bank need to support a higher limit for Android Pay?

Using First Direct, Android Pay works fine for me below £30.

Above this limit, even when supported by the retailer, the card machine has always displayed the "Insert or Swipe Card" message when I try to use Android Pay.

I assumed it was because my old phone didn't have a fingerprint reader, but it has still happened with my new one. It could be a coincidence and perhaps I am just seeing the message that pops up when contactless has been used too frequently without a PIN entry, but I'm not sure.

Is it the same at checkouts displaying this symbol:
androidpaylogo-outlined.png

Opposed to ones just displaying the normal contactless symbol?

That's not correct.

To pay with Apple pay you need to verify your fingerprint (Which can also be used to unlock your phone), regardless of the transaction value.

To be honest it's a bit inconsistent, I've seen checkouts displaying the Google Pay logo (The one in your post) and the Apple pay logo yet it hasn't let me pay for something over £30.

Other checkouts have neither logo and let me pay for something over £30.

Can't remember I'm afraid, but it was certainly at retailers using card machines that display the contactless symbol over £30 (rather than the ones that don't even offer contactless as an option over that amount).

That would be due to the limits imposed by the companies i imagine, My store show both. but only up to £30 for now.

Some retailers don't know the difference, or that anyone can pay more than £30, so they say they take contactless, Apple Pay and Android Pay. In reality, they just take contactless, which of course means the others work too.

If a retailer says it can take Android or Apple Pay, it should really be able to take payments for any amount.

As I said before, I can accept shop floor staff not realising this. It would however be nice if you could contact retailers and get a definitive answer, but that often leads to the same answer 'Yeah we accept Android/Apple Pay but only for payments up to £30'. To me, that doesn't really count.
