For those who maybe interested, BBC Two will have a programme 9pm tomorrow (Wed 14 June) about a group of passengers bidding for the Southeastern franchise.

Short clip here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08vg002

In 2016, with the contract for Southeastern trains due to expire in six months, a group of dissatisfied but determined passengers come together to try to take a railway franchise into their own hands.
Jacques Peretti follows the group as they set about executing their revolutionary plan. Is their dream far-fetched, or will the Department for Transport, looking for fresh ideas, see this new passenger-run company as a viable option for the franchise?

That title makes it sound like its about the third party retailer

Thanks for the tip. This should make interesting viewing indeed.

I wonder what their beef is (other than London Bridge woes, which are down to NR rather than SE).

The odd bad day aside, SE are punching the lights out in terms of performance figures at the moment.

This is a complete non-story surely, their chances of success are zero.

"....will the Department for Transport, looking for fresh ideas, see this new passenger-run company as a viable option for the franchise?"

No.

No.

I would certainly have thought so.

I admire them in a way. However I hope public money isn't being wasted scrutinising their "bid" if it's a complete non-starter, as seems likely.

The public love a David and Goliath re-hash. In reality it'll take a bit more than a slingshot and pebble to deal with the DfT...

I thought this was dead and buried already. They started it a long while back. ( http://www.kentlive.news/commuters-...rn-franchise/story-29561734-detail/story.html ) A group of commuters want to launch a bid to take over the Southeastern rail franchise.

London and South East Rail, or LSE Rail, is a group of eight commuters brought together through the frustrations they experienced while travelling with the company.

The not-for-profit organisation calls itself 'the people's railway', and wants to run the service by commuters when Southeastern's current franchise ends in 2018.

They have a website floating about somewhere. ( the link in the article is a dead link now)

I even offered them my services <D

Broadcasters seem to want to come up snappy often ambiguous titles which aren't to long in length yet convey real meaning. Looks like they failed on both counts!

No worries. I must admit, I don't see why Southeastern are considered very bad. I never use them for commuting but, I use it very often to/from Penge East or Lower Sydenham and hardly have a problem.

It's a Kent thing ( demographics ) people always seem so angry, about everything.

So a key pledge is "a seat for everyone".

And this hereby proves that this is a wishlist from a group of people who think they can do better than any serious proposal

(I mean we could have guessed that anyway but hey)

And me.

Here is a list of improvements, blah blah - please can they actually tell us how they plan to implement any of them?

You'd think at least some of them would actually understand the railway a bit but it's pretty clear from 15 minutes into the program that they don't.

Indeed, few clipboards and suddenly they know it all.

WTF.

"What do you think of the service"
"its good"
"he'll learn"

What a biassed pos program so far !

Feels like this was a total setup to create a TV program.

So that's where shooter got his order for 230's from...

However he makes the best and possibly most crucial point. Profits are low.

I've seen some poor TV programmes on the rail industry, but I think this takes the biscuit for pure naivety (and therefore credibility).

The visit to Vivarail shown on the programme just about sums up the different views on the 230s -

Person 1: "Oh it's lovely!" (after Shooter's told them all about it?!)
Person 2: "It's just like a tube train!"

Edit: And now they've filled out the pre-qualification questionnaire, which means they've submitted their bid and done something "groundbreaking"?!?
