A question which has posed on my mind for quite time: what are the tracks which remind you of / IYO suit the railway? Whether they are songs that you may listen whilst on a HST at 100mph, or just remind you our network, I'm intrigued to know.

My 4 tracks would be The King and All of His Men from defunct band Wolfgang; In the End by Snow Patrol; Life is a Rollercoaster from Ronan Keating and the 2012 Eurovision Winner by Loreen: Euphoria.

Would love to hear yours.

Geordie back from exile.
Flash and the Pan - Waiting for a train.

First ever visit to Wales (1982?), Cardiff Central having gotten off a train from Newcastle and waiting for a train to Paddington, all the while listening to radio on the Walkman thingy. This song came on and is my lasting memory of Cardiff.

My favourite rail song is Graffiti on the Train by the Stereophonics. Plus it teaches a good lesson - don't graffiti or try to ride the outside of trains.

Do these tunes actually have to be "railway related", or do they simply have to remind one of travelling on the railway?

It Takes a Lot To Laugh, It Takes a Train To Cry Bob Dylan
Love In Vain Robert Johnson, but I prefer the version by The Rolling Stones
City of New Orleans Arlo Guthrie

Rubber Bullets by 10cc has a vaguely railway-sounding rhythm about it, reminiscent of the sounds of running along jointed track (to me, at least). Weirdly it isn't the most railway-related of their songs from a lyrical standpoint- that honour probably goes to "Under Your Thumb".

Surprised that nobody has mentioned Smalltown Boy yet. The music video is famed in these circles for featuring a Class 210 unit:

A few songs that remind me of the railway, these are the ones I can think of at the moment.

Chemical Brothers - Galvanize. This reminds me of the Class 319s, I wasn't sure why initially but I vaguely remember listening to it when travelling on one through the Thameslink core last year. It's stuck ever since.

Royksopp - Royksopp Forever. This one was much easier to remember, I was listening to this song on 507001 last year which was running non stop between Birkenhead Central and Hooton to make up time. Ever since then, it's reminded me of the Class 507s.

DJ Tiesto - Urban Train. When I first found this song, I would listen to it almost constantly and this would usually be when I was travelling on the Merseyrail network. Whenever I listen to it now, that's what usually comes to mind.

The works of Blyth Power and Eastfield may be of interest, those two being among the leading lights of the oft-neglected sub-genre of "Rail Punk".

I seem to remember you mentioning this ;)

I see SS4 beat me to the Saxon track. You could do worse than 'Johnny on the Monorail' by The Buggles, from the 'Age of Plastic' album (same one as features 'Video Killed the Radio Star' and all in all a brilliant album). Features a lovely bit of Valenta thrash in the mix at the beginning.

Never mind "Last train to Trancentral" by the KLF.

Or that it is sampled in Scooter's (English language version of) Nessaja, which also contains a reference to the German ICE system "It's not a bird, it's not a plane, it must be Dave, who's on the train".

Under your thumb-Godley and Creme. Tells the story of a man on a commute with a strange woman who ends up throwing herself out of the train. Gives me the chills every time I hear it.
