I am conducting a survey of research to find out about the opinions of airline travellers; so I will be creating a couple of threads with polls attached. Feel free to leave any comments too!

This time:

British Airways or Virgin Atlantic?

Don't forget to vote, as well as telling us why!

I can't say as I've used Virgin, but the last time I used BA, they gave me a lot of free booze.

They've stopped that on UK/European flights. Almost nothing to differentiate them from Easyjet now.

I was visiting Mexico at the time, so I presume the flow of alcohol hasn't been cruelly curtailed on that route ?

I'd hope not. Even some of the American carriers have free booze in Economy on transatlantic. There's a clear direction of travel in BA's service standards though.

I flew BA from Heathrow to Philadelphia in May of this year, and the service was absolutely shocking. I've not flown Virgin Atlantic for some years now, but the service was never an issue for me at all when I used them.

I flew BA this week from LGW-Nice (only because Avios points made it cheap to do so) and the service was nothing more than 'ok'. The safety briefing was a bit of a shambles, and the crew announcements seemed to go on far longer than on any other airline I've flown.

Cheers

Booze etc on BA's long haul ops is still free (at the moment anyway unless Alex Cruz is planning on charging for that in future?)

Depends what you want. Virgin are too chummy for my liking, in everything they do. BA though seem to be lowering standards too, so that isn't too promising either.

Recent flight to the US on BA was nothing special, food average, but flight punctual. The return however could not be faulted in any way, excellent crew who really made the difference.

While there an internal flight with Virgin America was not a good experience and with a particularly unpleasant member of cabin crew who clearly wasn't having a nice day.

Virgin. Always good service. Usually slightly cheaper (in my experience). Generally better extras too - their Disney Springs bag drop at Orlando was a great help for us.

I've done 8 trans-Atlantics with Virgin, and all have been great. Three with BA, one great, one mixed, and one which was frankly horrific.

VS doesn't go anywhere that I want to go except Hong Kong, so I don't bother with them. I would have taken them on UK domestics but by the time I wanted to book they had decided to cancel the routes.

I have Gold or Silver status with BA most years and fly them a lot on short-haul, but on long-haul I prefer to use other oneworld airlines unless BA has a significantly better deal.

Virgin fly to several USA destinations, direct from Manchester. Whereas our "national flag carrier" insists that everybody transits via Heathrow or Gatwick.

I have been separated from my luggage twice in my various travels. Both of those occasions were with BA. I have used BA four times, so that's a fairly damning average (on a very small statistical sample). I have flown with various other airlines including Virgin (many, many times, because of the Manchester provision), Cathay, US, Delta, Continental, SouthWest, etc., and have not (yet) been separated from my luggage except by BA.

As an aside, and going back to Manchester services, every person who transits via Heathrow (especially) when they would have been better served by a Manchester departure, is causing four unnecessary passenger movements at Heathrow per round trip. It's my contention that were better provision made for long-haul travel from our regional airports (Manchester being one prime example) we might well not need the controversial third runway.

Virgin are better than BA but from the Birmingham area for long haul it is usually cheaper and better all round experience to go via a European hub, on Air France, KLM or Lufthansa.

This is very hard for me to judge, the quality of service is very similar.
Virgin do have slightly better interiors.

Never used Virgin and only used BA on one occasion (Manchester to Düsseldorf and return, along with connecting Düsseldorf to München and return on British Airways' former German subsidiary, Deutsche BA) so there's only one way I can vote really!

Flown long haul with BA twice. Both times the cabin crew were surly and the aircraft interior was dirty and falling apart. Flown short all with them twice and to say they are no better then Easyjet is kind of insulting to Easyjet. :)

Haven't flew with Virgin since vowing never again back in 2007 after a truly awful experience flying to Orlando.
BA has never really floated my boat either as they aren't really bothered with you unless you want to go via Heathrow or Gatwick.

They're both rubbish.

I tend to have had reasonable experience flying the national airline of where I'm going. Thai and Malaysia are particularly good (the latter's run of bad luck being a particular shame).

I've gone budget for US trips, my last two trips were with Thomas Cook and Norwegian. Both entirely reasonable for the money, Thomas Cook was great direct from Manchester to SF for around a third cheaper than Virgin.

I am a big BA fan as I like their no nonsense style and the staff have always been very good on the many flights I have had with them. The last time I flew with them I had to write to them to praise their staff who I felt were exceptional in sorting out a problem.

I have no problem with virgin but they are a bit too cappuccino for me - too much froth but both knock the socks of the US airlines, KLM and Lufthansa in my view.

Airlines I really like are Emirates and Wizz Air but the worst by far (despite some great staff) are Flybe with their winged Transit vans and terrible timekeeping

I think Wizz are terrible. Pinky-purply Ryanair with worse legroom[1] (I physically can't sit down in the regular seats, I have no choice but to pay for the exit), more sneaky fees and lazy staff with an attitude problem. Only if I have to.

Flymaybe - yes, I'd agree - rubbish management, good staff. A bit like Northern in that regard.

Sleasy are probably my favourite on short-haul. They just do what they say they will for a not extortionate price, and do it quite well. The LM of the skies?

BA - without the extra service what's the point? It'd be like paying extra to go on VT then a single 350/2 turns up instead.

[1] I think the actual pitch is decent, but the old thick-backed seats eat it all, a bit like the "good" old IC70.

The new Wizz A321s have blue slimline seating and look pretty smart inside, but the legroom is a bit tighter I think. I flew DSA to Sofia earlier this year with Wizz for £30 including a cabin bag, exit row seat and two beers onboard - winner.

I like easyJet too but my only problem is they're rarely the cheapest on routes I fly and I would not pay a premium for them (as I might for BA for the points), Manchester to Amsterdam is often cheaper on Flybe and Manchester to Hamburg is usual beaten by Ryanair and often even by Eurowings who are a really nice outfit. Last time on this route I booked a Eurowings Smart fare for the same price of the easyJet flight 15 mins early, which included extra legroom, hold bag and snack.

Slight digress there but yeah I'd probably prefer BA over Virgin due to being able to contribute more to my Executive Club account (which is looking pretty empty in all fairness).

So, a poster under the name 'Richard B' thinks that Virgin are better......

I wonder why that should be.

I'd pay a premium for easyJet over Ryanair or Flymaybe, personally - the former is rubbish, the latter isn't known as Flymaybe for nothing, however nice their crews might be (and apart from one specific Luton member of cabin crew I've not seen for a while easyJet crews are pleasant too).

Their operation is just *slick* these days - passenger information in particular. They really impressed me a few months ago - serious delay to the early LTN-GVA, so they sent out a notification and delayed check-in so I could have a few hours more kip and head to the airport on a leisurely basis, and they coughed up the EUR250 without argument, too.

Fully agree, though I decided I would never fly Ryanair a long time ago.

What I don't understand is why some people (including some friends in west/south London) get sucked in by the headline fare of Ryanair and don't consider that it takes 2-3 hours to get to STN and usually costs a lot more than going to LGW or LCY. Yet they happily pay £150+ per night for a hotel that they barely spend any time in.

To me, Ryanair makes sense if you live near one of their regional airports and/or they are flying to where few other airlines go. I've never had a problem with Ryanair timekeeping, but Easyjet has been utterly appalling on a number of occasions. In practice I use either of them, depending on my destination.

It's a very difficult comparison to make.

Which class? Which aircraft type? Where am I trying to get to? Leisure or business? Casual or regular?

VS has an extremely limited route network, really only making it useful if I'm headed from London to North America.

For most aircraft types, if I'm flying in economy, there's little difference. They're uncomfortable in both cases. I marginally prefer Heathrow T5 to T3. BA's 788s are a disaster, so I'll avoid like the plague (I'm assuming we're comparing long-haul, as short-haul makes no sense in the comparison).

VS has a better hard product in premium economy. Their business product is great if you're travelling alone, but poor if you're with somebody. BA's business product is solid, but their policy of charging non-status customer to select a seat is ridiculous.

Soft product is variable in both cases. VS put a gloss on, but can be very unprofessional when things go wrong, and the whole Virgin "yay, cool, let's do it" grates with me. BA have lost their professionalism over recent years, which is what happens when the industry in the UK do their best to turn cabin crew from a respected profession into a minimum wage job.

So, I'd generally choose neither, given free rein. But for my flight patterns, Virgin generally just don't cover the routes, so it'd end up being BA.
