As mentioned in another thread, there is a short notice blockade at Reading this weekend.

There are no direct trains from London Paddington to Oxford or west of Oxford, so passengers can either faff about with buses or, more likely, travel out of Marylebone on Chiltern Railways.

Does anyone know of Chiltern plan to strengthen their services accordingly or will there be crush-loaded conditions? It would be useful if they could run one or two loco hauled diagrams between Oxford and London.

An announcement from Chiltern can be found here, though it should also be noted that Spurs are playing Bournemouth in the Premier League at Wembley on Saturday with a 1500 kick-off.

Summary:
  • 8684 extra seats on Oxford services over the weekend, but will still be extremely busy.
  • No additional loco-hauled services, presumably due to the late notification.
  • Queuing systems in place at Marylebone and Oxford
  • Avoid using Oxford trains for intermediate stations where possible
  • Use Bicester North in preference to Bicester Village - A shuttle bus will be in operation between the two
  • Use Gerrards Cross instead of South Ruislip and Northolt Park
tl;dr It'll be hell. Avoid travelling unless it's absolutely necessary.

I gather there are a few extra loco-hauled services each way between London and Birmingham, presumably to cover stock that is being utilised to strengthen Oxford services.

Is there any likelihood of NR doing the same thing at Reading the following weekend?

Chiltern's loco sets are too long for the bay platforms at Oxford and with 3 & 4 being extensively used by GWR as well as XC it's not really feasible for them to send the locos to Oxford, much better to use them on Birmingham and strengthen 168s instead.

Are there any "GWR only" tickets for London - Oxford, (apart from advances)?

GWR have been heavily promoting Advance purchase tickets of late and these are emergency works, so chances are a good number will have been sold.

Of course, in the olden days, return Thames Trains tickets were valid on late night services on the X90. (Both being owned by GoAhead).

Spurs won too, as a supporter I was there!

I think that Chiltern Railways should definitely operate more loco hauled services to Oxford, that would mean loco hauled fans may use them as opposed to GWR.

Most passengers aren't particularly bothered about the exact type of train though

If no one was bothered about the rolling stock, I doubt this forum would be very well used!

And what proportion of rail passengers between Oxford and London does this forum, or rail enthusiasts more widely, constitute?
