Not sure about the rail industry, but in the private sector firms I have worked in in similar roles at that sort of level the hours have been pretty much whatever the job has demanded. Core hours of 9-5:30 in the contract, but in reality usually more like 8-6 or longer.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you are the sort of person that likes to keep an eye on the clock and leg it as soon as your hours are up (or even insist on 'balancing up' your hours after a <time period>), you are probably not the right sort of person for this sort of job.

I full agree..
I reached Management staff grade for BR before retirement and whilst I had a contracted number of hours to work I was also expected to do occasional unpaid overtime to complete a job. This involved working one day at a weekend or working at home due to an emergency or deadlines to meet.
