Hi, can anyone help....I have my OPC test coming up but I cant seem to find anywhere that I can practice the counting low tones test. Are there any sites or resources I can use that will have the sound of the tones in a similar kind of practice scenario for the test?

I never found any practice material for that one and I'm not sure there will be. As you may read a lot on this forum I think that is likely to be one of the tests that you can do...or you can't

As above, I couldn’t find anything either. As I recall you get a couple of practice runs, but as has been said many times before on here take a deep breath, stay calm, and make sure you’re ready and understand what is being asked of you before the test starts.

Yep that was my approach and I passed. Clarify your understanding by questioning them they are happy to explain and just stay calm

I agree with the above comments. The first bit of the TEA-Occ does require a lot of attention! The 2nd and 3rd parts I'd say aren't so difficult. But I did find some practice software that has helped me a lot in improving for it.

I searched and searched but couldn't find anything. What I did tho was make some 1.5 second low and high tone and quiet sound files and threw them in to a play list on shuffle. It wasn't perfect as you couldn't be %100 sure you'd counted all of them but it was good practice to just let it run in the background. I'm hoping to make some you tube videos with the correct numbers at the end but I just haven't had a chance yet

The tone test surprised me a little as it was quicker than I expected it to be when the tones were finally mixed together. I wasn’t sure if I’d missed a tone on the first sequence but I passed the tests anyhow. I don’t think practising will help to be honest as you’ll never find the correct pitch or speed of tones - just try to stay alert and focus on exactly what you need to do for each section.

Hands under table, count them on your fingers, there were no rules saying that this could not be done.

Not so easy when you got to count the tones while circling the phone book don't ya think.

AFAIR at least one of the exercises had 20+ tones. Not enough fingers! Also in part 2 as baz962 says you will be circling numbers/text whilst counting tones so still not enough fingers. I would say best advice as previous poster mentioned is to practise concentration techniques (like mindfulness) and staying calm. I believe how2become have simulation software, but it won't be quite the same.

I’ll second this. I recall the sequences get longer as test progresses and the tones come quickly too. I was concerned about this part of the day beforehand but it really wasn’t as bad as it sounds. My own view is that you’ll either be able to do this or you won’t, I’m not sure there is an effective way you can learn to do this, but if you concentrate and stay calm you will be fine.

I followed all the good advice on this forum and got a good nights sleep, gave myself plenty of time to get to the test centre, no caffeine before hand, good breakfast - That at least gave me the confidence of knowing I’d prepared as well as I could. Just make sure you give yourself the best chance you can!

Yea I was going to say something similar I guess you could record your own tones and then just use a phonebook re creating a test yourself. I also believe you can or can't do the test's and think they are designed that any practice is more to know what you will expect and not really to get you any better. I think that's why you have a two strike's so it is down to natural ability and not practice, and I myself only practised group bourden and the fault finding test and there is a wafv on youtube.

Hi, what practice software did you use? I'm struggling to find any.

I’ve just done and passed the assessments today. I found the tones test one of the easiest parts to be honest, don’t stress about it.

As others have said , I found the first part of just counting the low tones the hardest , although I suspect it’s more the case of expecting the low tone to be a lot lower than it was lol !

Hi. So how does the rest work then? I’ve watched you tube videos but I didn’t think the explanation was very good. I was unsure what I was listening out for?

Exactly as above, you have to count the boops..or beeps..the low tones.

Don't worry about it too much as it's all explained on the day and I'm pretty sure we were given a practice go at it.

Excellent cheers. Is that how the test runs or do you have to read a telephone directory as well?

Its 3 parts, that's how the first part runs, it wont be as long as that but you do it about 6-7 times. The second part you just read a telephone directory looking for double symbols think of it like doing the group bourdon test but looking for double symbols and going top to bottom rather than left to right, the 3rd part is doing both at the same time except there wont be any high tones you have to count all tones. I found part 1 the hardest and part 3 the easiest.
