I was trying to make some sense of the work going on at Lime St today, while riding out to Huyton and beyond.
Although it's hard to get an overall picture, with only a small spyhole in the metal fence at the concourse end, and the odd gap in the tunnel wall.
The platforms being reconstructed in the southern half (P7 and the 2 new ones) seem a long way from being usable.
P7 was being fully rebuilt at the throat end.
In the northern half, nothing at all seems to have been done to P3-6, and the two central disused sidings are still in place.
P1/2 are in use for the limited service via Huyton, using new signalling (LL plated) and the reversible Up Slow out to Edge Hill.
The platform starting signals look distinctly temporary.
The Down Slow, at least, has been renewed up to Edge Hill, and there are new crossovers between all the lines about half way up the hill.
You'd expect all lines up to the new crossovers, and maybe on to Wavertree, to be bi-di eventually.
As far as I could see, the old throat trackwork was still in place.
Presumably the throat at some stage will be renewed/simplified, with the final routeing performed on the new crossovers up the hill.
There is bright new tunnel/cutting lighting in place, but it looks temporary and might just be for the renewals project.
None of this really hints at what layout will emerge next Monday.
The station and trains were very quiet, and Upper Crust seems to have gone on holiday.

I have found the following information on Gensheet. Perhaps this is what will happen in the future unless the plan has changed. The following platform closures are listed on the Engineering Access Statement (all numbers are the old numbers):

Platform 8 - 23/10/17 to 24/12/17 (this is listed continuing to be closed from next week).
Platform 6 - 28/12/17 to 08/04/18.
Platform 9 - 28/12/17 to 02/06/18, which is the "start of the 2018 blockade" (page 99).
Platform 4 - 09/04/18 to 02/06/17.
Platform 2 & 3 - 30/07/18 - 07/10/18 (following on from 2018 blockade).

The following statement suggests when the next full blockade will be: "no access to Liverpool Lime Street 02/06/18 to 11/06/18 & 14/07/18 to 30/07/18" (page 255).

This seems helpful although there is no mention of the new platforms. Presumably they will be needed to cover existing services.

Section 7 of the EAS is the bit that shows the disruptive stuff. The 2019 one is due around now.

Now that the rebuilding of the platforms at Hartford has been completed I note that the lengths have been re-instated to take far more than just a four car 350. Any reason for this?

When I lived within walking distance of Hartford Station there was a Liverpool to Euston which called at Hartford with a typical departure time of 06:53. This was a very convenient service (with BR Breakfast) and there was a balancing service in the evening.

I understand Virgin make no such calls presently. Is there any hope they might sometime be reinstated (albeit with less hearty breakfast)?

"Gensheet" looks like a good resource. Alas the links don't work for me, viz:-

Works on Chrome/Safari for me but Gensheet states the following: “Unfortunately these file links can break due to stray capital letters in relative links and directory names, so sometimes the pdf structure stops working. This can also seem to happen due to reactions between Adobe Acrobat plugins and the specific web browser.”

Edit: the page which you linked to does not work for me but the other pages do.

My first trip yesterday through LPY since the blockade started as I had to get the 0716 to Birmingham New Street. Having arrived at 0650 everything appeared to run smoothly except that there was no 0657 to Norwich. I assume that it was booked to run as platform 1 was quite crowdwd at 0700. At 0710 the crowd had doubled when the 0727 to Scarborough arrived. This was a six car and no doubt would be very full on its departure.
My apologies in advance if this has already been reported. The PIS system at Parkway has been updated. The orange numbers and letters have been replaced by ones in white which to me are much clearer.

It's a standard engineering block every 6 weeks somewhere which means that train starts from Warrington for the week.

Naturally, every 6 weeks most of the commuters fail to check anywhere for service alterations for their journey and thus turn up for it when it isn't running.

Perhaps, given the work that’s going on in Lime Street, the TOC should try harder to ensure that the ‘commuters’ are better informed. Just a thought.

Does anyone happen to know whether the current round of works are expected to finish on time? Lime street is due to re-open as from Monday morning, which will no doubt be a relief to some.

Yesterday was good fun in my area with Lime Street being shut and Arriva being on strike. The rail replacement buses (Which had been Arriva) were replaced with what they could find from where ever. A chap on duty at West Allerton said this was causing problems as they coach drivers were on tachographs and it had caused problems as their breaks were causing delays to the regular timetable. That said I encountered no significant problems on my journies.

According to @NetworkRailLIV on Twitter, it’s on time. They have mentioned that one new platform opens after Christmas and the other after the Summer 2018 works. Platform 1 will close permanently next Summer.

Some issues on the last day of the works today as a points failure at Liverpool South Parkway caused the suspension of Merseyrail services for an hour or so this morning, and the problem has happened again this evening. All trains between Liverpool Central and South Parkway cancelled.

For some reason regular commuters (for the main users of that train are they) seem to be the worst for checking engineering notices whether they be posted online or at stations and without fail every 6 weeks there are a smattering that turn up for said train and it isn't running, engineering work or not. You can set your watch by the Twitter complaints. Maybe as it only affects one train the company could request the crews working the service the week before announce a reminder but you can guarantee folk will still turn out for it. It's been cancelled every 6 weeks for at least the last 5 years but still causes issues.

I was on the first Wigan Wallgate to Kirkby shuttle as far as Rainford and back. Loadings were about 20 going to Liverpool and the return was about 7 in the carriage I got on. I am ashamed to admit that I was unaware Wigan Wallgate P3 has platforms on both sides like Ulverston!

Platform 3 at Wigan Wallgate is definitely the platform adjacent to the left side of a train in the bay, looking towards Kirkby/Southport. I imagine that opening the doors on the opposite side would be very much contrary to the rules, however close to the train the platform might be.
Normally only the first public train of the day to Southport departs platform 3 (NSu), this being the DMU set which has stabled in the platform overnight. Two earlier trains to Southport go ECS.
On Sundays the train stabled in platform 3 goes ECS, and the first public train departs platform 1, having come down from the carriage sidings.

Something, somewhere's gone tango uniform. Sat on the 10:17 Newton-le-Willows-Lime Street which arrived 9L and hasn't reached Earlestown yet after a long stay in the platform

Its been messed up all morning. A Signal failure East of Manchester Piccadilly didn't help. Then a Warrington BQ - Lime street decided to go on Sit-Down strike betwen Earlestown and - St. Helens Junction.

Edit: Something also broke down on the Warrington Central Line at about the same time too.

Things seem OK at Lime St itself, though the disruption is feeding through to cancellations of some Airport services.
LM/VT have been close to time so far.

NR news item on the successful completion of the blockade:
https://www.networkrail.co.uk/running-the-railway/our-routes/lnw/liverpool-city-region-upgrade/
Engineers replaced almost 2,000m of track, redesigned and lengthened platforms and built two new ones (platforms 7 and 8) all of which will help provide passengers with more seats on more trains in and out of the city.

The main changes so far, the new ladder crossovers being brought in at a later date and no access to 1-
4 from the down fast in the tunnels. Has to be accessed from DF at edge hill for now.
