Just curious as to why the people on here want to become signallers.

Is it because your are a railway enthusiast, the money, prestige of the job, responsibility, working on your own, not seeing management for extended periods or whatever other reason?

Me personally, I love being on my own I certainly don't get that bit of quiet time at home, the money is certainly a bonus and I enjoy it when things are not running as they should (that being said I'm more than glad it doesn't fall to sh*t all day everyday).

Either way, indulge me and let us know why?

having worked in a prison for the last 15 years I can assure you the thought of working alone without having to deal with a lot of my “clients” is an incredibly appealing thought!

It appears to be a stable, responsible job I’m well used to working shifts and I know that I could deal with the pressures and of course the money and benefits are appealing.

A big selling point for me though is the amount of people on here who are signallers and appear to genuinely enjoy their job at whatever grade, the same cannot be said for my current employment.

Indulging enough?

Sufficiently Indulged!!

Got a few on my line who are ex police, prison officers etc, by in large seems to be a good crossover!

For me it was being able to play a central role in making the railway work daily, without us trains wouldn’t move simply put.

You can make a real difference to train running, positively and negatively!
You can finish your turn after a really hard day of delays of failures feeling totally drained but really pleased you done a solid day’s work and made a positive difference hopefully.

The negative is that you can kill people, I can’t stress that enough to people wanting to do the job, you mess up you’ll kill someone, you can go to prison !

Bodybags in the cess aren’t good full stop!

It is a fabulous job, great pay, great terms and good hours.

Yep, I'll second that, the accountability that comes with being a signaller is certainly up there!

It's actually quite a big plus for the job for me personally. I find that it motivates me massivly to stay on top of my rules!

I am not currently in the industry but have two applications in at the moment, have passed all the online assessments and am waiting to see if I go to the next stage. My motivation for applying is based on doing something useful, responsible and has a potential career path. I worked in print for 15 years and although the money was good it was effectively a dead mans shoes scenario. I am also comfortable in my own company so that appeals as well. Agree with Lmc1976 the majority of people on here all seem to enjoy their job, not many people say that these days.

My motivation is that I was made redundant after 30 years service in Flight Operations for a major airline, I see signalling as being quite similar to flight planning as both have routes and safety is a strong factor in day to day running. I enjoy a challenge and the pressure that they both sometimes bring, I am starting my signalling career on Monday and really looking forward to it.
