Neither politicians or council leaders are worth the money that they're paid.
Please don't complain if your train is cancelled due to high staff turnover, going back 20 years London busses achieved staff turnover of 50%in some garages, guess what that did to services, this was why Ken made additional payments to top up drivers wages. And bus drivers could be trained in 2 weeks. You have an interesting definition of economic reality.
If a role can't be done by someone who isn't qualified to bachelor degree level (or higher in some cases) than the salary should reflect that, whether the job advert says degree required or not. That is economic reality.
TOC employees enjoy the benefits of both public and private sector employment. The 'economic reality' of the railways is without huge government subsides there wouldn't be trainee drivers, there would be train driver apprentices earning something like £200 a week and coming away with a NVQ at the end of their 18 month apprenticeship period. At that stage they'd be offered a reasonable salary e.g. £25,000 per annum - enough to make a train driver a more attractive role than others but not so much it will prevent the TOC making a profit.
I have never seen a politician, university Chancellor, council leader or company director justify what they are paid.
Being self employed, my actual income is about half the "minimum wage" for a 45 hour week with no holiday or sick pay. I dont begrudge anyone who earns more though - its my choice. If I want a higher paid job its up to me to get one. Not to moan that someone else gets paid more.

What happens when individuals read certain newspapers their entire lives...The thread is nonsense and just a chance for people to (unwittingly) show how their views are coloured by their own experience.

No, they are being paid what they can get away with from their 'blackmail' position due to the gateway to entry and their replacement, subject to how far they can push the government before it decides 'enough is enough'.
What about the taxpayers who subsidise those TOCs?

That’s pretty much my life too Essan and I agree with the last sentiments as well.
Train drivers getting a decent wage for doing a difficult job that requires a large amount of commitment to train for are not the people that should be getting attacked.
I don’t think I could do the job (although I have considered it a couple of times). It seems to me to be a way of life as much as a job and besides that you’re not even allowed to listen to the radio while you’re driving...
