All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –November 1957

Sixty years ago Standard class steam locomotives were still in production with ten locomotives delivered in the month. Diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate with nineteen locomotives delivered in the month and the pilot series diesels had commenced delivery with the first BTH Type 1 delivered. There was also an increasing flow of new diesel multiple units.

New Locomotives
Standard Class 3MT 2-6-0 – 76099
Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 – 92155/56/57/58/59/60/80/81

Swindon Cross Country (Class 120) – W50702/03/04/05/06/07

In the month sixty six steam locomotives were withdrawn, thirty six being over fifty years old with Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 23 Class 0-6-0ST 51307 being the oldest, having been built by Kitson, entering traffic in March 1877 and condemned eighty years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older main line secondary and branch line passenger engines and old freight engines who were at the bottom of the cascade of power from the continued delivery of the Standards and Diesel Multiple Units. Fifteen locomotives condemned were built post the 1923 grouping, however only seven could be considered as a post grouping design.

A number I have photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

On this day in History - Day Excursion to Swansea - 4th November 1972

One way in the early 1970’s of travelling to interesting railway destinations on the cheap was to become a Notts County Football Club supporter for the day and use their football special train (Footex). Being in the old Division 3 at this time meant little risk of football hooligans and some interesting railway destinations. On this day forty five years ago Notts County played Swansea away and I used the the Magpies Footex for a trip to South Wales and back with traction being provided by Peak 51 and in lieu of the match a walk out to Landore MPD. Result of the match was a win for Swansea 3-0.

Nottingham - Swansea
Class 03 (2382/86/97/99), class 08 (3020/58/59/82, 3168/75/85/86, 3255/66/69, 3419/34/37, 3515/78/94, 3606, 3756/57/90, 3907/10/94, 4005/12/19, 4119/27/28/38/70/72), class 20 (8002/12/16/39/72, 8146/57/58/80/92/93/95), class 23 (5901), class 25 (5180/81/98, 5202/25/40/46/67/71/72, 7510/13/14/15/16/17/20/64/69/86, 7615/19/24/42/44/56/57), class 28 (5705), class 31 (5689, 5837), class 33 (6505/24), class 35 (7094), class 37 (6607, 6727, 6876/84/85/91/99, 6913/23/58/79/81/87/92), class 40 (356), class 41 (41001/02), class 45 (46/48/51/64/75/88, 118), class 46 (147/48/69/91/92), class 47 (1551/89/92/99, 1603/12/15/53/73/74/82, 1700/16/17/20/28/29, 1804/27/65, 1902/09/13/17/30/31/43), class 52 (1011)

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – November 1967

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see three further locomotives from the final batch of Class 20’s and one of the remaining couple of Class 47’s delivered.

New Locomotives
Class 20 – D8317/18/20
Class 47 – D1960

The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

D5522/32/80/88, D5623/36/54/58/71/74/96, D5832/33/38/47/52/58

Steam withdrawals in the month decreased slightly from one hundred and nineteen to one hundred and sixteen. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In August thirty six Black Fives, twenty eight 8F’s and forty two BR Standards (including thirty three 9F 2-10-0’s) were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with sixteen locomotives condemned. At least three of the steam withdrawals survived breaking up and entered preservation.
