My employers are reluctant to provide me with the appropriate footwear at the moment (some rubbish about them not being required until I take certain extra training). My colleagues on the other hand say that's rubbish and they got their's issued on day one. We're supposed to wear safety boots/shoes even in backroom roles.

Rather than constantly argue with the stores department i've decided to get my own, figuring that the work issued will most likely be foot killers. Anyone know what standards they need to meet or have any recommendations?

Depends on the job in question. I (as a driver) wear btp issue magnums reinforced plastic toe plastic zip and eyelets. They're ridiculously comfortable and last an age

I think as long as they are EU standard it doesn’t matter. I wear Doc Martens slip on boots with steel toecaps and they’re very comfortable.

You can get toe-capped footwear at Screwfix quite cheaply, and also ones with the steel sole plates, (for builders in case they stand on a nail etc).

Doc Martins are very good quality (but more expensive) and have oil and fuel resistant soles. They last me for ages and are comfortable, so in the long run they are not as expensive as they seem.

Our requirement is simply; black and sturdy. Most people tend to wear their own.

Our requirements are steel toecap and reinforced soles. As above. Someone a few years back DID stand on a nail walking somewhere they shouldn’t have been and it came through the top of their boot.

Our issues ones have horrible orange colours on them and look like trainers but are very comfortable.

I have a pair of dickies boots with steel cap & midsole. Fairly comfy, very cheap. Before that I had a pair of Sievi boots with steel cap& midsole. They were by far the best boots I ever had. Incredibly comfortable and lasted me ~ 10 years. I recommend Sievi to anyone.

Arco® ST590 S3 Safety Shoe Black are my company Standard issue. To me anyway, we all got something different! However they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever had, very much to my surprise.

I bought a pair of magnums after my company issued “Toesavers,” gave up after 3 months and then got replaced with safety shoes which aren’t as supportive as boots for stumbling over ballast in the dark and kicking points.

I got the Magnums but to be honest can't see why I need steel toecap boots for train driving not like anything heavy will ever land on my foot driving a train most guys I know wear walking boots not even steel toecap. Make what you will of that.

The law says that if an item is required for safety on the job then the employer must provide it, full stop. Ask to see the risk assessment that identifies the need, it may be that you don't need ankle support or toe protection until you get out of the classroom...

I bet walking boots would be more than adequate. A steel toecap isn’t going to stop an HST ;)

Got a call out of the blue whilst sat at my desk today. Been supplied with safety shoes, if I wanted boots it would have been another two weeks and by all accounts they're foot killers. They said i'm free to buy my own as long as they meet safety standards and are black.
