Can't see many similarities I'm afraid. These are Fisa Lean seats, though I don't know what unit it is on:

Those Vienna S-Bahn Desiros are brilliant units though. If only the 700s were like that...
I agree. They're actually better appointed than the Class 800s!

The biggest problem I find on the 450's is the width at shoulder level, and I doubt any seat will solve that unless they go 2+2.

Not on the 800s, they don't. They use the cabs.

I forgot to mention the 159s. They don't have guards offices.

Having travelled first class on an 800 I can confirm that in that carriage there is a sort of kitchen/storage area between the cab and seats.

There might be, but it is unlikely the guard uses it, they will go through there into the back cab

Travelled on a 444 the other day they have aged really well and really are a superb train

Regarding 158/159s have any 159/0 been refreshed yet ?

I note all 159/1 and most 158s were refreshed by swt with this programme continuing under swr but with no interior colour scheme change

What are the plans for the dmus. .. are new seats in store ?

You can check the fleet list on the very first post in this thread! :) I try to keep it as up to date as possible.

The franchise promised "more seating", whether or not that means new seating is unknown.

It probably means more 450 operated services :( or longer trains :)

At least we know if the first one is the case it won't be on the fast PDL runs.

Generally all the Desiro trains from that era are exceptionally well built.

I have been commuting on the Class 360s on and off for the last 15 years almost and save for the seat covers needing replacement as they have wore out and the replacement carpets in the vestibules they don't feel much different from what they were new. No rattle, squeak or aging interior panels etc that are wearing out or looking exhausted.

Similarly, the 350/1s only show their age by the filthy carpets and threadbare seats. Nothing else is loose, rattly or damaged. They really are built to true German "premium car" quality. I bet in 30 more years they'll just look dated rather than knackered, a bit like some older BR DMUs and EMUs which are of similar quality - anything ADtranz or Bombardier built up to about 5 years ago will have fallen apart by then (though with the rounded-windowed *Stars they have really bucked their ideas up).

All they need is new seat foams, covers and carpets and they'll genuinely look new despite now being over 10 years old.

What SWR do need to do, though, is clean the ceiling conduits, they are truly filthy with 10 years of grime. LM manage to keep theirs clean, running a brush or vacuum along it is hardly difficult.

Indeed everytime I travel on one, (two today) I think make the most of this while we can, it'll be a crying shame if they end up stored for a long time or even worse scrapped after little more than 20 years life! In respect of the air-con in first class it's my only real gripe sometimes on hot days the first class area will be stuffy but as soon as you move into the vestibule or main body of the vehicle the air-con seems much more effective.

They do indeed appear to have started cleaning them, together with the 458 interiors (including the toilets!). All things SWT never managed to do.

It's generally common not to clean easily accessed ventilation ducts and grilles of muck (you see it in hotels too), and apart from making the air dirtier and therefore unhealthy it just looks unprofessional, and really obviously so (and they are dead easy to clean in half a second with the Hoover). Good to see SWR are getting onto it.

Got to think the 158s, 159s and 442s will end up with 2+2 First Class seating as well. Seems madness to me, as with 442s on Fast Portsmouths, 444s on Weymouth/Pooles (and possibly Portsmouth via Eastleigh) and the 159s on the WoE having 2+1 made sense, with 450s on outer suburban and stopping services having 2+2 seating. Even odder if they are going 2+2 fleet wide is not settling on a standard model of seat.

Might win a few headlines for supposedly championing commuters but why on earth travel First Class Off-Peak or at Weekends any more?

Some 350/2s have been sent to Long Marston for corrosion repairs in the last few weeks. Aside from the 357s, how many UK Adtranz/ Bombardier EMUs built before 2008 have undergone corrosion repairs?

Apart from the 357s that you've quoted I don't know about Bombardier products. However the Metro-Cammell built 460s had to have quite extreme corrosion repairs as part of the 458/5 project.

Well, LM run 350s from London to Crewe on the daily, and I'd say that's almost the same length.

Only the 2+2 (110mph) seated examples are meant to be used on that service (though actually the demographic of its users, with a lot of family groups with kids etc, mean the 3+2 layout is in some ways actually more suitable - the bays of 6 are very popular when one ends up on it by accident, the width isn't an issue if you sit adult-kid-adult, and there are 2-side airline seats for people travelling alone).

As a complete aside I'd quite like to see some experimentation with other layouts such as 3+1 on services with high leisure demand. DB have some trains like that.

5713 and 6012 now carrying SWR logos.

The guys at Wimbledon are doing several units a day now, every time one goes in to the shed they seem to take the opportunity to replace the logos.

Indeed, seems to be coming on at a fair rate now. Just spotted 5857 too.

Thanks all for your ongoing updates. The fleet list on post one is being updated as often as I see updates. :)
