This part of the "Other Public Transport" sub-forum seems to me, to be the one most suited to this post -- though the issue which it concerns, has in part to do with private transport. Mods, please move if that considered appropriate.

Am asking this question on behalf of my brother (who is not a student of public transport). When he lived, some years ago, sixty miles west of London: on a number of occasions when making day trips from his home to London, he drove to Richmond, left his car in the definitely large car park close by Richmond station, and carried on thence by Underground.

He is now living in Birmingham, and is wondering about possible equivalents to his previous Richmond "ploy", which might work as well for that purpose. Can anyone suggest a point, approximately the same distance from the centre of London, as Richmond -- but on the "north-west-ish" periphery of the capital; conveniently reachable by road, with reliably capacious parking facilities, and close by a rail station (Underground and / or national network) with frequent trains into central London? Would be most grateful for any suggestions.

If travelling at weekends Hillingdon or Ickenham are good bets. Just off the A40 so easy from Brum (I live in Worcestershire so often use the M40 to get to London) gets busy weekdays though and are often full by 10.00am. Easy trip into town then by Met or Piccadilly lines.

Stanmore's normally quite a popular one for these kinds of scenarios; just off the M1 J4.

How far would he wish to drive?

Warwick Parkway is good if he just wants to get away from Brum and park his car. Fast and frequent trains into London.

If he's wanting to be right on the Tube network, then either Hillingdon or Stanmore, depending on whether he'd be coming down the M40 or the M1.

As intimated in my OP, my brother is no fan of public transport, and uses it as little as possible; his big wish here, though, is to avoid driving in Central London.

Thanks all, from me and from brother, for suggestions.

I'd also nominate Stanmore. Friends of mine come down from Nottingham for the NFL at Wembley and it works very well for them.

Yes, Stanmore is a very popular location for people to park when visiting Wembley. It has a decent sized station car park too, and easy access to the M1. I'm guessing that street parking wouldn't be too bad, but that's a guess!

When I lived in Oxford I used Hillingdon for weekend visits to London. Station car park on Saturdays street parking on Sundays. During the week I would just use the Oxford Tube or x90 bus
