I remember when I first installed SimSig years ago there was a few routes you could download for free to have a go on. I have just re-installed having not played it for a number of years and wondered if there were still any available like this to see if I can get back into it before spending the money on a full version.

Yes there are free simulations available, a lot of the old classics have remained free such as King's Cross and Peterborough.

Paid sims should have a 15 minute trial so you can check things out.

Think the last freeware sim released was Derby a couple of years ago, i'm not saying every release should be freeware, however suggest now & again a new freeware sim is released as not everyone has the money to purchase the latest payware sims.

And the developers involved don't have endless amounts of their own spare time to spend hours writing Sims to give away out of the goodness of their own hearts.

There are quite a few routes that are free to download, and there is some variety in complexity too. Carlisle is a favourite of mine, and it's not too challenging to run it single-handed. Having said that, the 79/80 (I think) timetable does provide potential for the odd melt-down with all the loco changes and splitting and joining of trains!

Of course, if melt-down is your preference, there's always Kings Cross :)

If you look on the simsig forums, One developer has said that the stuff he has in production will come out as donationware.
