I was delayed on a Northern train and if I request a cheque or RTV I'd get less than £2 back. I can, however, select 'free ticket to anywhere on the network.' However, if I chose that option how long would I have to redeem it before it expired?

The one I received (back under the previous TOC incarnation) lasted a full year from issue, which is the same as RTVs so probably an industry standard. It also didn't have a designated start time, so unlike the Northern all-day ranger offer, you could use it from the earliest train of the day.

All the ones that I have been issued with by "new" Northern have no expiry date and can be used at any time of the day. Don't hold your breath though: I'm still waiting for a claim from over 6 months ago to be processed. Two reminder emails to Northern have also gone unanswered.

I would recommend ringing them up to see where it is. It seems the only way they will eventually send out the compensation.
I don't think I have had one come from Arriva with their Carillion run Customer Experience Centre within the 20 days that they say they will reply in.

No expiry.

But you probably won't get it any time soon. My record is seven months before settlement of a Delay Repay claim with Northern

I wonder if Northern didn't allow for how many extra Delay Repay submissions they would get as a result of changing from a 60 minute delay to a 30 minute delay.

Is the online Delay Repay form supposed to show a confirmation message or trigger an email acknowledgement? When I clicked submit it cleared the form without giving any message and I haven't had an email acknowledgement through.

You'd think so (and you do from GTR), but given how inept Northern are at pretty much absolutely everything else it wouldn't surprise me if their IT was similarly incompetent.

And sometimes you get no choice - I've had £3 returned to my card as an automated delay repay from a ticket bought on the app; I've now asked them for a single ticket, though I don't think I'll get anywhere.

Old Northern were bad at sending out complimentary day tickets regardless even when the delay was on a long journey with a short connection on Northern.

I've been told it does if it works successfully. It seems the problem is the form doesn't work in the latest version of Chrome.

Is there a way setting national rail enquiries to only provide journeys on Northern? I have 4 of these to use but not sure of how to get the best use out of it.

The customer experience centre told me on the phone recently that they are currently working to approximately a 7 week turnaround time for emails and electronic claims. Paper claims or letters may take longer, I don't know. The 'excuse' given was that strikes have created far more claims than expected. I did press this point by asking if they had not anticipated an increase in claims as a result of strikes, the response was simply "I can only apologise for the delay", so I left it there.

Thanks,
I tried it for a journey I knew but it gave me a very indirect route to avoid having to walk from Piccadilly to Victoria. lol But thanks anyway, it should be useful!

I have used it from Furness Vale, Wigan, Preston, Barrow, Carlisle stopping off on route along the coast returning on a Virgin advance from Carlisle to Stockport. However my best was Chinley, Sheffield, Leeds, Carlisle, Hexham (visiting the wall), Newcastle. This time I returned on TPE to Stockport in this case Club 55 but could have been advance.

Aren't Northern supposed to respond to all comments and feedback (including Delay Repay applications) within 20 days? What have Transport Focus got to say on this?

That doesn’t make them any different to most other TOCs.
Sometimes a nudge will make them prioritise your case.

I still have a Delay Repay claim from April 2017 outstanding with Northern! It was submitted on line and I got an automatic confirmation email but I have heard nothing since. Reminder emails sent at 3 and 6 months have also gone unanswered. I think that their Customer Services department have just given up under a mountain of claims and complaints. A strongly worded letter has just gone off to a manager at Northern's head-office and I'm expecting more than a single complimentary travel voucher for my 35 minute delay after all this faffing around.

I finished up submitting a claim one day after the previous one. I received a voucher for the first one and expected to receive a second one a couple of days later but a second one is so far yet to turn up!
