How often have you travelled on the services of Southern Vectis in recent times?
Not for maybe three years... I'm not a bus enthusiast so I paid no attention to the specifics, but on that visit it seemed that Vectis were running... well, buses! Just like buses anywhere really, the same noise, smell, cramped seats, jerky acceleration and deceleration, being thrown side to side on the corners and roundabouts, exorbitant ticket prices. Have there been massive changes recently?

I'm reliably informed that this picture:

...shows the state of the art in guided buses at the moment. Call me picky, but I don't really want to clamber my way on board that and wedge myself into one of those seats.

This thinking is probably the reason why we'd never see integrated transport for a long time...

You have shown a most selective single-deck midibus of indefinable age in the image. All the most recent Southern Vectis that buses we used in recent times when on holiday in Sandown (the resort where the railway station is far from the sea) were double-deck buses from Sandown on the number 2 and 3 routes. Have you any similar images of these?

The Enviro 400 Southern Vectis use are quite pleasant but the Scania OmniCitys used for all number 8 and some 2 and 3 services are right cart horses with a terrible ride and lack the trains sprung seats.
They've ordered more 400's so hopefully we might see the end of them

Bit of nostalgia for you lot...

Slightly faded, but I've got some more I can post if you want... Those of you who follow me on Twitter will have already seen them.Peter Archive 1733.jpg Peter Archive 1721.jpg

As above, great photos Peter. That’s how it was when I first travelled on it in the early 80s when I was about ten years old.
My uncle lived on Southsea seafront and getting the hovercraft over and going on the old underground trains was all very exciting.

A manager saw me doing the photos on one of my visits in VEC/TIS days and made me an offer I couldn't refuse... a cab ride all the way along the line, both directions... :D:D:D:D:D

Right place right time Peter. Lovely.

And all perfectly above board as well. :D
I remember when I first visited that 03079 was stabled at Sandown on what I assume was the stump of the line to Merstone and Newport.
My stepbrother and I stood on its running plate and marvelled at the fact that there was a loco to underline in our Platform 5 books...

Interesting to see Sandown signal box there. Looks about where the maintenance siding is now. Brading looks a lot different back then. Strangely more overgrown than now!

Don't forget, if you want to respond to SWR's "Consultation" document, you have until 31st December.

I'm sure your contributions will be considered carefully - after all, no-one could think that this consultation is just a bit of 'window dressing', and that SWR have already made up their mind as to their intention.

I see they've put some God awful Island line branding on the side of 006.

Looks similar to what they've done on 455 and 707. But the writing is huge and completely unsuited to a nicely fresh painted 1938 LU train.
Least first don't do Barbie livery anymore!

Did the Island line not to cleave to the traditional Southern Region practice of only putting the last four digits of the unit number on the ends?

No, they only ever used the last three digits - and were one of the first areas to - at least occasionally - carry the full six digits.

As to the consultation - is South West Trains really in any position to make any changes to the infrastructure?
This sounds like a talking shop - and I can't imagine a self powered solution coming out much cheaper than renewals, the chargers alone will not be cheap.
