I wonder what contingency plans Northern have in place should the new trains suffer reliability problems like the 175s did when they came on the scene? With First NW, it led to 37-hauled trains along the coast lasting a little longer than originally planned (and later on 47-hauled trains substituting for 175s on 'The Irish Mancunian' diagram) and likewise the 101s on Sheffield line services.

Will Northern be allowed to keep the 142s on their books for another year or so if availability of the new trains is low by 2020?

They will probably split 4 car sprinters into 2 car sprinters.

A very good spot, thanks for sharing.

Reassuringly large windows... and it almost looks like full-width gangways, although hard to tell.

Has there been any indication of car width? It would've been sensible to try and build them as wide as 323s/333s (subject to gauging), to allow for extra standing space or even conversion to 3+2 if needed later in life.

Can't find any car width figures but the driving cars will be 24.0m, with the centre cars 23.35m so I think they'll be almost certainly narrower carriages as wide 24m carriages might cause a few clearance issues!

Saw some new images of them today. Noticed the name will be “Northern by Arriva” similarly to chiltern

It is possible!

Also, is it me, or does it have massive gangways??

Looks quite an attractive modern unit and the livery actually suits it (unlike older units), but it's a shame they are yet another class of unit that has a "tilt profile"[1] which will make it feel more cramped than necessary.

[1] I know it's about sway, not tilt, but nonetheless the Class 700 feels *massive* because the sides are completely vertical.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the lack of a window band!

Oddly, they actually seem to look vaguely decent without (now there's something). I think it's because the windows are wide and the pillars narrow (which is itself a very good thing).

They seem more than passingly like a Turbo- or Electrostar in that (and the "tilt profile") regard.

Interesting that the doors seem to be actually at thirds like 150s etc, rather than the more normal 1/4 and 3/4 ish you seem to get on 23/24m units these days.

That said, @Camerons_Gaming on Twitter (in discussion with Sam Jessup of Virgin) did mock it up with the windowband...

Yeh they do. I've seen a model in Northern's HQ and it has really long gangways.

I think it suffers from a similar syndrome to the 170s for example. Longer carriage lengths require larger gaps between coaches where clearance is limited.

Where you have a nice, relatively straight, piece of mainline you can achieve longer coaches with shorter gangways.

Another example would be if you compare the 455s and 317s. Much the same length coach but the gangways are longer on the former due to the more restrictive loading gauge.

Whilst it looks nice anyway, a window band definitely makes it look a lot more sleek

They aren't though - there is a slight profile change through the body. A bit like 350/450, its very difficult to perceive it.

The gangway is that size as it is not compressed. Most sealed gangway connections look like that uncoupled.

Also OT but the inter vehicle gangways on 313-322, 455/6 & 507/8 are identical. There is no difference in length etc
