I just wondered if anybody might have any thoughts on this, I won't mention any time or location as I'm not looking to drop the guard in it if any rules have been broken.

Six car train pulls into station, 2 car 466 on the front and 4 car 465 on the rear. Quite a few people get off and a few get on, one rather intoxicated gentleman gets off the 465 intending to get on the 466 (I don't know why) but before he gets to the 466 the doors close, it probably wouldn't have been obvious to the guard that he intended to get back on again. He is standing leaning against the side of the train pushing the button and wondering why the doors wouldn't open, despite this the guard gives the starting signal and the train starts moving. What immediately crossed my mind was the incident at James Street in Liverpool a few years ago. Fortunately on this occasion another passenger ushers the drunk away from the train and sits him down on a bench and tells him there will be another train shortly.

The guard was at the rear of the train and may not have seen the incident clearly, it was dark and rather murky. Shouldn't the guard have been at the front of the 465, which seems to be normal practice, where he would have seen the incident clearly and wouldn't have been looking down six coaches?

No harm done on this occasion but I couldn't help thinking what might have happened.

Different TOCs have different rules about where the guard should dispatch from.

For example, I believe the rule on Northern is that the guard should dispatch from the rear, maybe the same applies on Southeastern.

There aren’t guards on SE, it’s DOO as far as I know.

It isn't DOO outside of the London suburban area. The guards don't dispatch even where they're present within it though which is different to most services in the UK.

The only units that are solely DOO are I think the 376 Metrostars.

We have a different rule.

Most of the routes have guards, only the Metro routes are mainly DOO.

I'd be interested to know what % is DOO and what % is Guard. Especially as we have been held up in other threads to be a shining example of DOO.

Our DOO is area based and not specific to a unit. 376 Electrostars are pretty much all Metro based but they are capable of Guard dispatch. I've only seen one outside the DOO area once.

This was outside of the DOO area just to be clear.

Could you be more specific ? Are you aware of where our DOO boundary is ?

Yes I am aware, lets say it was south of Otford.

Driver opening/closing if DOO, driver opening guard closing if guarded.

I must say that sounds fair enough to me. These people (idiots?!) who persist on jumping off a train to try and get back on a few doors later.

It's a well worn technique. They get off, you close the doors, obtain interlock, they start woodpeckering on the next set of doors.

You take power into notch one, holding the hillstart. The instant they stop touching the train you release the hillstart and start rolling.

Very satisfying if done correctly...!

It was definitely guard closing the doors at the station in question.

Yes apologies. That was a huge misstatement I have now corrected!

It's lucky I've never driven guarded SE trains (I may have done once or twice). o_Oo_Oo_O

No problem, I think the guard just didn't see him in the dark.

Plenty of drunks about this evening as the silly season gets underway!
