I always put my village name in the "address line 2" on online forms etc. The village a couple of miles away has some duplicate street names and it still falls within the same postcode area. I know the county isn't strictly necessary, but I still find myself writing it down anyway - habit, I suppose.

One thing that used to amuse me was that my gran always used to write our address as "nr Lossiemouth", which had the potential to cause some confusion (Lossiemouth is IV31 where we are IV30).

Many years ago as a student I worked as a sorter for international mail as a Christmas holiday job and it was amazing the number of letters etc addressed to nr York that would have ended up on their way to New York if I had not redirected them.

Ahh I was waiting for someone to pick up on this lol. Try explaining that to my friend and some of the people who live there who disagree with you. Interestingly, Heathrow Airport still also maintain that Middlesex exists as on their website they have written their address as Hounslow, Middlesex.
An argument I have with my Mum too frequently!

That's because, as far as the Post Office is concerned, Middlesex still exists, apart from a few areas that were transferred to Surrey and one (Potter's Bar) to Hertfordshire.

As much as places like this have officially been considered part of suburban London since 1965, they just don't feel like it at all. This is one of the many reasons why 52 years on lots of people still consider them to be part of their original counties. I agree with the Post Office!

Lots of towns south of the Thames got a very raw deal anyway. Bexleyheath for example is one of the few towns in what is today Greater London, not to have an underground station. Croydon is simular but manages well instead with its trams.

Abbey Wood on the other hand is lucky to be going through a life changing upgrade because of Crossrail. It is a complete coincidence really. Had it not been for Crossrail then it too would be a sorry state.

Best we keep the tourists in the centre of London and ignore the rest we debate over whether should even be considered London lol
