They still run. However, GTR started cancelling them so often that they are now not advertised unless they are running. Control do not even bother to inform frontline staff that they're not running. Sometimes they turn up, sometimes not.

Fortunately there are two Underground lines and Overground which are all well used on match days. A lot of people walk to/from Highbury & Islington.

Who pays for the extra trains or extra carriages? The club, the operator or (in London) TfL?

For many years when we had bigger crowds, there would be extra trains running after Charlton matches, usually running fast to London Bridge, and I assume that the regular trains would be lengthened too. With our decline these have been less regular, especially with the London Bridge platform closures and other engineering related closures, but in December, when Portsmouth brought a massive following to The Valley one of these was again laid on after the match.

A few years ago after a game at Bolton Wanderers, I remember getting on an extra service, a 2 car Pacer to take us from Horwich Parkway to Bolton station :D

VTEC put on a service last year for Non-League finals day at Wembley, as South Shields (FA Vase) and York City (FA Trophy) had both qualified for the finals. That must make South Shields the lowest level football club to have (at least in part) had a dedicated football service??

ScotRail tend to run football specials if Aberdeen are playing a final in Glasgow. Most notabley they ran tripled 158s from Aberdeen to Glasgow via Dalmeny a couple of years ago!

On the flipside however, SWT bring in an entire extra half hourly service when there’s rugby at Twickenham!

Not quite true, they just cancel services elsewhere (usually the Weybridge via Hounslow) as they don't employ enough drivers/ guards.

The Bolton-Horwich shuttles are a regular operation for Saturday afternoon matches but are currently affected by electrification works. While I don't know for certain I suspect that BWFC may well contribute towards the cost as part of the planning permission for the stadium. Anyone care to comment...?

Metrolink always seem to have a habit of messing around with the service when one of the Manchester clubs are at home, as I've often found out after a day at the East Lancs Railway

On a similar theme, getting really sick of all the track and platform closures affecting trains to Charlton, both from Thameslink and for a long period of time Crossrail (at Abbey Wood). After the "full" reopening of London Bridge this month, I had hoped for a nice smooth journey, but no once again on Saturday no trains from London Bridge (instead twice hourly from Victoria)

Here are a few I'm aware of:

In WAGN and FCC days, there were football extras provided for Arsenal home games on the Hertford and Welwyn stoppers which terminated at Finsbury Park, then started there for the return workings. I think this practice continued into GTR's reign too but it has since been stopped. There were also outer suburban extras including one from Royston IIRC.

For Brighton home matches at Falmer, Southern's recent arrangements have been a 6 car 313 on the Brighton - Lewes service and a combination of 6, 7 and/or 8 car 377s on the Seaford workings.

When matches are on at Hampden Park, ScotRail provide regular Glasgow Central - Mount Florida shuttles (normally a 380 but previously 314s and 334s). The Cathcart Circle locals are also bumped up to 6 cars.

Finally, Merseyrail. They provide no extra services and almost never any additional capacity for football matches despite very high usage and a 'Soccerbus' service to both stadiums. Overcrowding is severe and trains almost always leave people behind in the aftermath of fixtures due to the lack of 6 car workings.
I've been out before on Sundays and seen all Northern Line trains as 6 car when there's been football on. Doesn't happen in the week though, I'll grant you that!

Apart from the odd Merseyside Derby, strengthening on a Sunday for football almost never happens.

ATW were more or less accused of conning the public today in connection with the Cardiff City v Manchester City 4th Round Cup tie today. During the week, they were tweeted to ask if any additional trains would be running and told "yes". However, what happened was that Taff route (Merthyr, Treherbert, Aberdare) trains were as it happened, diverted to run via the City Line due to Engineering work and 5 in each direction called additionally at Ninian Park. So additional trains just referred to Ninian Park, which has no booked Sunday service, only. There were reports of severe overcrowding on the Cardiff Valleys with many trains running with 2 Cars rather than strengthen to 4 which with many Pacer diagrams with no work on a Sunday. Fair play to ATW, though, they arranged VSTP additionals, a 1350 Hereford to Cardiff and an 1858 Cardiff Cen to Shrewsbury

Meanwhile GWR have cancelled four of the last six services from South Wales to Paddington this evening - no prizes for guessing why.
