You can certainly see the guy's opinion and can for sure see why he is less than pleased, but surely during all the consultations he would have known that something would have been going either there, or at the very least, very close to there.

ECHO readers are divided over two “monstrous” towers that have appeared at the bottom of a retired couple’s garden.

Andy Wells, 67, and wife Susan live in Mersey Avenue, Maghull, where the new Maghull North station is being built.

Mr Wells said the value of his house had fallen by 30% and it could lose even more, but many readers pointed out the benefits of living close to a train station.

Michael Myers said: “House value fell by 30%? Just rephrase it as excellent rail links...”.

And Kevin Pilnick was even more optimistic: “The house won’t drop in price at all. A house in a nice area very close to a train station for a commute in lpool. Will increase!”

Merseytravel ’s website says that Maghull North station will feature a staffed office, a pedestrian footbridge with disabled access, toilets, a 150-space car park and passenger-waiting facilities....

As you and the article have mentioned you can't just construct a station without a consultation first so if the complaint basically boils down to "I knew there would be a station there but why must it have these "towers" then I have no sympathy. I feel like even referring to them as towers is ridiculous as they quite obviously contain a lift shaft

the residents whose house back onto the site have not exactly adhered themselves to the local press, who may well have taken some artistic licence, or not, when one of the quotes regarding the building works back in November were compared to the Somme

One of the reports state that the lift towers would be brick clad *and then painted black*. I wonder if that's true? Surely you'd want them grey/blue to blend better with the sky and be less obtrusive?

To be fair to Network Rail, a couple of brick clad lift towers are rather less ugly than a long zig-zagging ramp.

If it was me I'd rather brick-clad and *not* painted, but it's a minor point relatively.

I wonder if something could be encouraged to grow up them to hide them a bit, make them look a bit less industrial.

Mind you, the residents haven't even had the worst of it yet. Just wait until the station opens and they're trying to enjoy a nice quiet G&T in the garden on a fine summers evening with the auto announcer prattling on about this and that, then they will have something to moan about

Merseyrail don't presently have an autoannouncer, fortunately for them, nor indeed any station announcements at all other than during disruption.

What was the view from their window before the station? Hordes of wildebeest charging majestically across the plain? Or just row upon row of identically boring semis?

thing is, and bearing in mind I grew up with what's now the Merseyrail Liverpool to Southport line immediately at the back of our yard, is that you don't notice even the noise or the movement of the trains...the houses mentioned in the article had a railway line there, so like me they probably didn't notice the noise as the line is in a little cutting at that point which will shield it even more, but the view was of open fields, so obviously not anything spectacular, but most certainly not a lift shaft

I've been stood on the platform at Aigburth station at 8am and heard announcements regarding the consumption of alcohol on Merseyrail trains.

The plains. West Lancashire (and I include in that pretty much all the way to Liverpool) is as flat as a pancake - almost Dutch scenery.

It's not super-attractive, but it's more attractive than a lift tower.

OTOH I doubt it will have affected their house price any. Anything lost from the view of the lift tower will be gained back from the new station nearby. Merseyrail is popular and people will pay to live nearer to it. And at least they appear to have put a high "wall" on the bridge so people won't be peering over.

TBH if I were them I'd probably just plant some Leylandii and stop worrying about it too much.

Some of the people I know living in close vicinity to Aigburth station would have benefited from those.

I used to live 2 minutes from St Michaels. I miss the hum of EMUs through open windows on summer evenings.

If you go back far enough, the view they will have had was of the exercise field for Ashworth Hospital!

Before the station construction started I believe it was a grass bank and some trees.

From personal experience there's many different prerecorded announcements!

Indeed... to say there's no auto-announcer's a bit of a fallacy... at Hunts' Cross they love the good old "See it, say it, sorted"- I've heard it 3 times in the space of waiting 15 minutes before!

The “please do not leave any luggage unattended...” message is another frequent one on my many trips on merseyrail.

as others have already said they clearly do, when I wait for my bus at Aintree station even over the noise of a very busy road they are clearly audible, so on a quiet station they will be even clearer

This is a safety announcement. Whilst waiting for your train please stand behind the yellow line until the train has come to a complete stop.

I find the end of this announcement amusing...it takes the guy a couple of attempts to switch the mic off!

Now, I know you don't mean "adhered" here, but it's annoying the hell out of me as I can't think of the right word :/

I was sitting in front of the keyboard and for the life of me couldn't work out the term I wanted, glad to be corrected though

From the article and the pictures, I think the 'view' that's being blocked is mostly sky. They were unhappy about it overshadowing the garden and reducing the light to their house.

Maybe NR could paint a mural of some Wildebeest on the lift tower? :D

If by repeatedly, you mean twice an hour then you’re right! ;)

As regards announcements, there are both pre-recorded and live announcements for late running trains and service disruption at all stations (except Chester)
