Not the end of the world but this journey is possible frequently throughout the day using Transpennine Express changing at Mcr Piccadilly and therefore 1st class is available the whole journey. Searching for tickets (I usually use Virgin WC website) there is no 1st class fare available - means I have to book both legs separately. Is there a reason for this or is it a 'quirk' of the system? I guess one possible disadvantage besides the extra time it takes is losing out on a possible advance fare. Many thanks, Mike

TPE don't always offer Advance fares for journeys involving a change of trains e.g. you can't get a TPE Advance for Stockport to Liverpool, despite being able to get one for Manchester to Liverpool or Sheffield or Liverpool.

You could buy an Any Permitted FC ticket from Preston and Leeds and use that if it works better.

I've come across this before when trying to book a through 1st ticket from Leeds to Birkenhead (to enable me to travel back for Christmas and have my through booking protected). From a position of ignorance, you expect that somewhere within the railway industry there's a big spreadsheet with every station going across and down so it would be obvious if there wasn't a fare for a journey, but evidently there isn't.

I wonder whether part of the issue is having one leg of the journey wholly within a PTE area- I know that it isn't possible to buy a 1st ticket between Leeds and Bradford/Wakefield/Keighley for use on East Coast .

Probably worth also saying that it's not actually going to be possible to make a journey in 1st between Wigan and Manchester for very much longer, once TPE move their Scottish services onto the Bolton route. So in that sense it perhaps just isn't worth adding the tickets into the system (though there are 1st seasons available, it would appear, so it may just be that nobody ever got aroung to adding the singles and returns).

Many thanks for the replies... I didn't know that TPE were going to move the Scottish services back to the Bolton route - I guess it was too good to be true and looking at how many commuters have been using the Wigan NW - Manchester route in the morning that's going to create a few miserable faces having to go back every day onto that awful Northern rolling stock.... Appreciate the info. Thanks, Mike

The Northern Connect service (via Wigan) will get brand new 195s once they become available, so any use of Sprinters will be temporary and long term they'll be no real age difference between the 195s running Manchester Airport to Cumbria via Wigan and the 397s running Manchester Airport to Scotland via Bolton.

But unless there's something about Northern Connect which I've missed, they won't have 1st class, which was the original point. Though I agree they should be nicer than a 150/158.

It is if you have a Wigan-Leeds ticket. You can just catch a Virgin train to Warrington, walk for a bit across Warrington's (first class?) town centre, and get a TPE train from Warrington Central. A Wigan-Manchester CTLZ one wouldn't be valid via Warrington, but that does have 1st class fares.

You would still be able to do a whole journey in first via Warrington, true. Well, except the walk :)
But it doesn't alter the fact that there is no Wigan - Leeds 1st class fare in the system, apart from seasons, and that's unlikely to change imho.

TPE won't serve Warrington Central from May!

Haha, thanks @jcollins - I'd forgotten that.
If you, theoretically, really wanted to do Wigan-Leeds in first after the timetable change I suppose you could travel to Preston on Virgin, then TPE to Manchester, then TPE to Leeds.
