Can you provide a specific example please of an infrastructure upgrade that has not yet taken place, or is currently delayed, that will prevent VTEC from introducing the new rolling stock?
Will delay new services not the rolling stock, the infrastructure can handle current time table..

Power upgrade in Doncaster being big one, Power upgrade needed North of York to Edinburghalso but will not happen imminently and they are waiting on an announcement on next two months on when and how much it will cost to carry out the work! Lots of promises for new time table in 2019 and 2020 will not be met.

The power supply north of Doncaster is not sufficient, and the upgrade has been put back by a couple of years at least.

Thanks for that. I was under the impression that the power supply work was completed, or at least close to completion, up to Donny. Perhaps I have misread!

VTEC knew about this in May 2016. The 'Note to Editors' section at the bottom of this ORR link has the decision letter in regards to the new services. It has loads about the Firm and Contingent rights for VTEC services based on upgrade works being completed/not being completed. They knew back then that 2019 was unlikely and that 2021 was more hopeful.

We were still offered positions in light of this info.

Did they?
Does not look that way in David Horne’s last paragraph in his letter and you have not formally been offerred a position without a contract! Until you get that contract then it is just words!

Oh and 2021 not set in stone either as his letter suggests!

Put it this way with the drivers they have over at the moment they better hope they can introduce more services to keep them busy never mind any new ones coming in!
You may be in for a long wait

Well the fact they were given only firm rights for the majority of services from 2021 (and only contingent rights from 2019 i.e. based on network capacity) suggests someone must have known.

Fyi I didn't mention contracts.

Ok i think I'm done with this forum now guys, there seems to be a couple of people on here that seem keen to peddle rumours to the rest of us hoping for start dates and it doesn't help at all trying to make the whole situation so negative for us. We were told 4 weeks ago that they still intended to give us a start date in April, so really, it is only their word that matters. Although like everyone else on here my assumption is that we won't be offered a date now, constant speculation and bickering helps nobody. Good luck to all of those that are still hoping for good news

Correct, this is a thread for Trainee Train Drivers at Virgin and I'm not really sure why some who aren't in that category are so obsessed with our potential role. Along with all current VTEC staff we're suffering an uncertain time and although the vast majority of info on here has been supportive there's an element that seems more intent on stirring..........if you want to troll surely that's what Twitter is for :) Good luck all

Its a forum.

Lots of people who have countered the sunshine and honey view that the potential trainees had have experence of the process, and being in the industry gives you an idea of what is happening and more likely not to happen.

If you take what appears to be solid advice as negative then maybe this job isnt for you.

Wanting and hoping for a start date and completely ignoring what is happening with regards to depot establishment and structural work is folly.

Sorry, but sometimes the world is not always nice and "awesome"

You are working from old info there fella..

Fyi you mentioned being offered a position which is as stated worthless unless you have a contract! Until you get that contract (which incidentslly, I hope they stop faffing you all about) then that “offer” is meaningless

Eh??

As mentioned earier I said that I hope it is not the case but I would be looking at other options, the situation had drastically changed since that email and I do hope they stop faffing you about!!
What I will not stand for is people denying the facts when stated such as company being over complement and new services not being introduced when they were supposed to etc that is not peddling rumours!
I feel especially bad for the bloke that turned down a start date last year and is now in this situation..

Burying my head in the sand? My post from earlier today clearly states what I think this sought after next email will say, I'm under no illusions, I've also already read most of the info you've shared today as it's been widely available so I know how grim it looks for us. You may feel you're being helpful but when the tone changes to "an offer is meaningless" or "you may be in for a long wait" do you not expect a reaction? (and it wasn't your post in the main I was referring to anyway). We all know the situation though and bickering over who's right is not particularly helpful as we are all clinging to anything which gives us hope rather than accept defeat. Like I said the thread is for Trainee positions and although I have appreciated a lot of input from those in the know I'm still unsure why some are so keen to comment. I don't see a benefit unless it's factual, you admitted yourself "you heard a rumour". A lot of input on here is assumed anyway as to who knows what as in this forum we're all faceless, you don't know me or whether I've genuinely been offered a position or whether I'm just following a thread for whatever other reason. I don't know how much you actually know. The only fact that anyone following this can be 100% sure of is when we get an update from VTEC.

If you’ve read my posts today you’ll see what my view is, far from folly and very realistic, it’s simply human nature to retain a small amount of hope until the final email arrives

Don’t suppose you know anything about Train Manager courses at all? I am currently waiting for a start date for Doncaster but know there was a course at the end of November. Had an email before Christmas to say there had been some changes to the training schedule and that they would be intouch in the New Year but just wondering if you might have any insider info. Cheers!

Hi have you heard any information about train manager courses yet? I email and email and no reply. Now I’ve been told there’s currently no vacancies in Leeds and that I’ll be automatically be offered a position once one comes up

Does anyone else think that as we didn’t get an update last week as mentioned on here was possible that the writing might not be in the wall yet as surely if it was and email would have been sent?

I do tend to agree, if it was a definite 'No' I' hope we'd have already been told as there's no reason to keep us hanging on. My own personal view is that I don't think anyone really knows the situation and that's why no further email has been forthcoming. We were originally advised back on 31st October that it would be within 6 months (so end of April) and have only had further correspondence due to maternity cover and I know from this forum a few have chased VTEC direct and received a "within the coming week" reply. My concerns are the delay in increasing the timetable, now possibly after May 2021 as this was I'm assuming why the need for new drivers was there in the first place however this was also known 5 weeks ago when we got the last email assuring us they were 100% committed to us starting. To be honest my positivity and optimism fluctuate daily if not hourly and with every passing article I read on the East Coast Franchise. I think all we can do is stay realistic and continue waiting as until we hear further we're all just guessing on the next stage. I keep telling myself to ignore all social media on the subject for my own sanity but the desire to know means I keep checking anyway :)

RE the email in October 2017, was it the end of March we were due to get an update, or April?

I suspect the end of April but that’s only what I’d imagine based on their previous deadline of October being the end of October.

Hopefully! Feels like we’ve been waiting forever. And this month in particular has dragged considerably

I live near to Hitachi in Newton Aycliffe and there was a bit on the local news last night how they have imported 2 Azuma trains from Japan for training. It said they’re due to start the rollout from December this year, and for some reason I always had this down as June? Guess that would be as good reason as any for the delay? Can’t wait to hear an update though, the wait is killing me!
