For the last week down in Birrarung Marr the general public have thier chance to view 1 and 1/2 car mock of the new High Capacity Metro Train. The HCMT 65 new 7 car EMUs being built by Downer Rail for the initially for Pakenham & Cranbourne lines in mid-2019, then the Metro rail tunnel and Sunbury line in 2026.
The bodyshells will be built at CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles before being shipped to the Newport Workshops where final fitout will occur before they make the trip to thier purpose built depot at Pakenham East. They will have the capability to be expanded to 8-9 or 10 cars.
The front end of the new units. The coupler will be under the nosecone.
Looking along the "Platform" with the lead 4100 car and the 1/2 4200 car.
The back end of the 4100 car. Of note these will have exterior CCTV at each car to allow the driver to see along the entire length of the train.
Looking along the 4100 car from the front near the drivers door. This area will have 6 wheelchair spaces.
These will feature LCD screen to display the next stop and a stripmap to show the location of the train along the line.
While these trains will seat the same as a current 6 car train they will feature a lot more standing room along the train. Areas like this will be at the front and rear of each car.
Looking back towards the driving cab. The seat design on the right I believe is the one chosen.
The drivers cab was a popular place to be so I couldn't get a decent shot of it but talking to a driver mate who was consulted on the trains has said the cab has had a total redesign. They will be ready for High Capacity signalling and I believe will run ATO through the metro tunnel on account of the platform doors.
