Agreed on the ungangwayed Desiros. They look like a rushed job that weren't properly thought out.

Agree. It almost looks like they intended to have a gangway, then someone noticed that there would be sighting issues for DOO on the then First Great Eastern route, and so Siemens went "right, you can have the same thing but with the gangway airbrushed out". Almost like the Scottish 385s where the opposite was done (take a reasonable looking non-gangwayed nose and just stick a gangway on without revisiting the whole design, and look where that got us).

Isn’t this what actually happened ?

The front end of those just looks (deliberately) like a gangwayed Desiro.

It's ungangwayed Desiros which to me look odd due to the shape of the lower body. I also find the Turbostar's slightly "cute" nose looks like it isn't taking anything seriously and is a bit of a toy train.

Disagree over PEP derivatives, they're quite a timeless design that still doesn't look dated.

Talking of PEPs, the Class 140 looks like a scaled down toy PEP from a Hornby set. Whereas production Pacers look like a 1980s-modern take on a heritage DMU with the three windows.

I'm with you on these, Neil. I'm not a fan of the Desiros without the gangway, they just don't look right to me. The Turbostars do look quite "cute", excluding the gangwayed 172s which I think look really smart.

I think the 507s and 508/1s look quite modern, it's hard to believe they're as old as they are.

Are steam locomotives allowed? If so there are plenty of contenders in that category. I'll start with a couple e.g. Bulleid Q1, BR Crosti Boilered 9F....etc.

Class 376 for me. Maybe I am just used to Electrostars with gangway doors. These South Eastern units look very plain without them.

Oh my god, the Crosti boilered 9F.
Horrible looking things.

The Crosti 9F with a chimney halfway down the boiler and a strange mutant Mini-Me smokebox door underneath the main one.5A8B5D8D-BE50-470A-B5E7-6A0DDFE01003.jpeg

That's got to be steams equivalent of the Fell Diesel?

(A classic example of Italian styling)

Definitely. Alpha Romeo, Ferrari, Crosti 9F.
You can see the lineage...

The Heathrow Connect 360s look slightly better at the front as the livery disguises the plainness of the frontal styling, whereas the Anglia ones look very "flat" and dull. Indeed they look a bit like the Class 60!

very subjective and it doesn't really matter to me what a train looks like when i am riding on it if it is on time and has enough seats to go around. That said the new Scotrail units very odd

Westerns. I've never been able to get used to these, with their coffin-shaped front and slab sides.

Agree about 10100 for the win, though. That thing used to freak me out as a kid after I saw it in a book called Diesel Pioneers.

Am I weird in liking the design on the 385s?

142s and 150s are examples of atrocities but most trains in the UK are ugly anyway because of bei very narrow (such as 195).

The Class 252, meanwhile, is living proof that we've been invaded by aliens (possible based at Cumbernauld Shopping Centre):

No way! The Q1s were not ugly at all, a bit weird, but not ugly. I agree, however, about the Crosti 9Fs; they were appalling. The Great Western streamlined Castle was a bad joke, but I heard somewhere that this was the intention: showing that there was no need to embellish a very attractive design by adding streamlining.

A bit more controversial would be my choice of streamlined Stanier Pacifics. Far too bulbous to be attractive; someone made the apt comment when they first appeared that they looked like an upturned bath-tub. They looked superb after the cladding was removed. I also find the unrebuilt Patriots and Royal Scots quite ugly with their huge untapered boiler and silly little chimney. They were much better when rebuilt with a tapered boiler. I would have preferred the new-built Patriot to have been done as a rebuilt one.

As for modern stock, I've just looked at pictures of the 380 and 385 -- unbelievably awful; I wish I hadn't looked at them. I'm just glad that they are kept well north of the border.

The ends of the 455s on the Southern look like the company couldn't be bothered to finish off the job of rebuilding them. The original SWT 458s were pretty ugly with the 'wardrobe doors' at the ends; the rebuilt end is a lot better, but I agree with what others have written about the mismatched window surrounds on the carriage sides.

I'm old enough to remember when a yellow panel on the front of EMUs was something new. I think it was around the mid-1960s. On the Southern Region, it was just a rectangular panel at first, and then the whole front end was painted yellow. Now that a yellow panel is no longer necessary, will the preserved 4-SUB have a green front once more?

If Steam are allowed for me the winner is Bulleid Leaders.

Oh yes! Perhaps the ugliest steam loco ever. The huge bogies were wildly out of proportion to the body. (It was also a frightful job to fire it, as the poor fireman was stuck in a tiny space between the coal-bunker and firebox.) Bulleid's turf-burning loco in Ireland was a better-looking loco.

Actually regarding the Q1 perhaps I was a little harsh as generally speaking Iam quite a fan of Bulleids designs. Also have to agree with your comments about the pair of Fowler 4-6-0s, l would also add the Crab 2-6-0 to make it a trio.
If Steam are allowed for me the winner is Bulleid Leaders.

I accept it's not beautiful in any shape or form but there is something about the Leader that attracts me, a little bit like an early forerunner to the 59 or 66s?

when built the 252 were stylish and sleek

Definitely agree with this!

I must be alone in thinking the 68s are somewhat lacking in the looks department... very strange front ends...

502's front ends were ugly enough to make bats crash. The 503s reminded me of Ena Sharples in Coronation Street.

175 just looks wrong too.

Totally agree on 175's. I actually quite like them apart from the front end and lack of carriages.
