Whilst there have always been a few accidents on the M62, recently I would guess there is either an accident, suicide, breakdown, lane closure, roadworks pretty much every day. Many accidents are quite serious and the resulting delays lengthy. Furthermore a lot of accidents seem to involve HGV's (although they may not have been the cause). M62 capacity is likely to be recued because it woun't be long before the managed motorway enforces 70 speed limit at ALL times. Traffic pollution may also be a determinat. As an M62B is unlikely to materialise (or be desirable), surely the rail infrastructure across the pennines needs a major boost (UIC gauge) to take some of the heavy freight off the M62.

NPR seems to be all about passengers as does the upgrade to TPE line through Huddersfield.
Why is nothing happening for freight?

Because by and large freight haulage is point to point and just-in-time; whereas the railway deals better with large bulk flows from terminal to terminal that aren’t ultra time-critical.

Given your focus on loading gauge do you envisage 'rolling motorway' lorry shuttles?
Presumably you would need to gauge enhance all the way from (say) Hull and Immingham to Liverpool?

And build loading/unloading stations on the way.

The reason managed motorways exist is because they significantly increase capacity of the existing motorway without having to build extra lanes.

Not forgetting that road haulage is now subsidised to 70% of its operating cost meaning that it is a miracle that any freight moves by rail.

Who are you proposing to run this relief service? Price? You'd probably only hope for a badly delayed congestion on the transpennine section to be able to have a good demand.
