Maybe Manchester Stns -> Penistone or Barnsley (Route Huddersfield) with a one-way change of route excess (Route Sheffield) for the return leg?

A Manchester to Penistone Off Peak Day Return route Huddersfield will also do the job at £21.60, with a 10p excess to pay for travel via Sheffield on the return journey. Less valid than a South Pennines Day Ranger, of course, but cheaper.

These tickets are to be withdrawn after 19th May, however, increasing the price to £23.80 for an Off Peak Return.
