I'm travelling on the 0516 TPE from Huddersfield-York on Thursday, where I connect to the 0639 VTEC to Edinburgh. The connection is 16 minute so "hopefully" I'll be fine. However, I have booked my tickets through Trainsplit.com and as the following; Huddersfield-York (Advance Single), with the same from York-Edinburgh. Given these are for 2 different TOC's, what happens if I miss the connection in York due to late running, or even cancellation?

Also, my girlfriend is going to collect my tickets for me as she's passing through Huddersfield station. I have given her my card but does she need my PIN number? I don't mind her having it, but she's having a hissy fit. It's been a while since I collected tickets that I can't remember if the PIN is needed, although I don't think it is. Could someone please clarify?

Thank you.

You take the next available VTEC service, and claim Delay Repay from TPE if you are 30+ minutes late into Edinburgh.

(You may take XC only if there is ticket acceptance, e.g. if there is major disruption, or at the discretion of the Guard before boarding)

The PIN is certainly not required!

I collected some tickets recently at my local station and not all the tickets printed from the machine due to an error. I went to the ticket office to collect the rest of the tickets and I was told to put the pin in aswell. I didn't know the pin as it wasn't my card so I just put in any pin and although it said pin error, the lady still gave me the tickets...

The pin should never be required. I’m assuming this was a default setting when using the machine. It’s a little concerning that it would request the pin although it shouldn’t ever be a problem.

For reference as others have said you must stick with the same TOC unless you know there isnticmet acceptance and / or you have Authority to travel preferably from the guard. However whilst it isn’t an issue at York due to there being no ticket barriers it is important in this case to keep hold of all your tickets if there is disruption to give evidence to board the next service and also for delay repay.
It’s incredibly unlikely you’ll have any issues boarding a later VTEC Service but it’s nice to show willing and have the right stuff on you for the greater good.

Thanks Yorkie, and the replies from others since. Much appreciated.

When issuing ToDs on STAR after inserting the card it does ask for the PIN. I just tell people to take their card out (if they haven't already fired in their PIN) as inserting the card is sufficient. As your example shows the machine will still issue the tickets. Some staff are not aware of this/blindly follow the instructions on screen so will ask you to enter your PIN.

This has happened to me two days in a row - TPE cancelling my train from Stalybridge, and Northern delaying my train heavily from Rotherham.

Both times I was told no endorsement was necessary, which initially worried me, but once the guards heard my story and saw the train running data to corroborate it, they were fine and dandy.

I did however ask both guards out of courtesy before I boarded. This isn't a requirement but I would recommend it to make sure you don't get a mardy one who PF's you or makes you buy a new ticket.

I really do not like having to explain my story when their is disruption, but needs must. if I know I an entitled to take that train following disruption e.g. next available service according to routing etc... I don't ask before boarding, in case they incorrectly say no. If I am asking for discretion to me shown I will ask before boarding.

A lot of people worry about this, but I can confirm that staff seem to be aware of the rules and we rarely, if ever, get complaints from customers who have had problems taking later trains on advances following delays.

In the early days of TrainSplit, some ticket office staff didn't know and would claim that your advance was invalid, but that seems to have been corrected now, so a thumbs up to the industry here.

Slightly different to my last question, I am in the process of booking a single ticket for my partner from Huddersfield to Stirling. By using Trainsplit, and tweaking, if we book TWO different tickets (Huddersfield-Durham; Durham-Stirling) it's cheaper than anything they bring up for Huddersfield-Stirling.

I have found prices that would give her approx 20 mins in Durham, longer than the Trainsplit through option which was 9 mins, but my question is, having booked TWO split journeys on Trainsplit rather than one direct through them, if she misses the train in Durham, would she be able to use the next available service (same TOC)?

Doesn't matter if the tickets were booked in different transactions from the same or a different retailer, provided you allow 5 minutes (the minimum interchange time for Durham) between the connections at Durham then if she misses the train she will be allowed on the next available service (with the same TOC).

There may be a bit of resistance by one or two staff members but as a whole most staff are now very accommodating of the fact that split ticketing is becoming ever popular.

Don't back down though if you are told you can't get on another train. It's your legal right and anyone who says not is drastically in the wrong.
