Sorry - I searched but the volume...

If I travel from Stevenage to London Bridge with a London Terminals (i.e. valid to St Pancras) how do I use my Oyster/Contactless without getting of the train?

Thank you in advance

You want to use the Oyster as Pay as You Go?
Effectively, yes.

So I board at Stevenage, pass through St Pancras, and now have a valid Oyster to LB. Same for the return. If I tap in, how will it know that I'm on a valid ticket from St Pancras. A check out, in the morning, and a check in, in the afternoon will lead to two charges of full days charge I presume.

You can't use it without getting off the train and touching in at first "Oyster" station and then getting back on again.

Is your rail ticket a long term season? How about getting a changeover to London Thameslink?

As others have said, you don't.

When used for Pay-as-you-go, Oyster and contactless need to be touched-in at the start of the journey and touched-out at the end of the journey.

You can't. You'd have to get off the train at St Pancras, touch in, then get on the next train, then touch out at London Bridge (at which point you may aswell use the tube).

Why doesn’t the “smart” card do something “smart” and just charge you the excess when you touch out?!

That's exactly what Oyster does - if it knows where you started and ended the journey.

In the OP's scenario, however, it doesn't know that - only where the journey ends.

To be clear, if you are using a travelcard on an Oyster and NOT Pay as you Go, it's permitted in these such situations to not touch in (or out, as the case may be), and your Oyster card will be OK with that. But part of the terms and conditions for using Oyster PAYG is that you need to touch in and out at both ends, and really, how else can the system know the correct fare to charge? If you don't like it, your only option is to get a paper ticket I'm afraid.

The OP won’t be using Oyster from Stevenage.

The OP will be using a paper ticket (or The Key) between Stevenage and St Pancras and wishes to continue to London Bridge.

Sorry, maybe I’m being thick, but if he gets on at station A (touching in) with a season ticket as far as station B, but stays on until station C m (touching out there), why doesn’t the Oyster Card just excess him at that point? (Assuming there is credit on the card).

Only works for season tickets within the Oyster zones, ie if your season ticket is on your Oyster card
