I’m trying to work out how much my Oyster will be charged when I make an off-peak journey on Southern/Thameslink from Victoria to Gatwick. I have a zone 1-3 travelcard on my Oyster, as well as a railcard loaded onto it, which normally gets a third off off-peak fares.

TfL’s single fare finder states that the off-peak Oyster fare with a railcard is £7. I imagine I’ll actually be charged less, given that I’ve already paid for travel between zones 1 and 3. This is what happens when I travel to Heathrow, where I only get charged for travel between zones 4 and 6. As Gatwick isn’t covered by a conventional fare zone it’s a bit more difficult to work out.

Could anyone shed some light on this? Cheers.

By my reckoning you'll be charged £4.05 off peak, which is the Railcard-discounted PAYG fare from zone 4 stations (e.g. Thornton Heath) to Gatwick. The peak Oyster PAYG fare (which gets no Railcard discount) is £8.50.

I'm not sure where your £7 fare came from?

That makes sense - thanks!

The £7 figure is what the TfL fare finder says is the off-peak railcard fare for a journey from Victoria to Gatwick (not taking into account a travelcard which covers part of the journey).

Ah OK - the £7 fare is from Victoria Underground Station to Gatwick, this would be what you'd be charged if say you went from Victoria to Blackfriars by Tube then on the train from Blackfriars to Gatwick - it is the so called through or multi-modal fare for a journey that involves travel on both Tube and NR services.

Instead look for London Victoria to Gatwick - "London Victoria" being the proper name of the mainline station.

I am in no doubt that the distinction between the Tube station and the mainline station misleads many people when looking up fares to or from London termini on the fare finder.

Ahh...the £7 figure was because I'd accidentally inputted Victoria Underground Station rather than the National Rail station into the fare finder. The off-peak fare would actually be £5.50.

Edit: you beat me to it - I'd only just realised!

It will not count the zone 1-3 travelcard if you board from the gatwick express platforms
