From what I hear it was West Coast that approaching Farron not the other way round. It's WCRC that should be getting the praise not Farron

I've also heard similar, but it was the coming together that probably ensured it happened. There must have been encouragement from somewhere high up and outside Northern. WCRC have rolling stock nearby doing nothing and crews available. A PR disaster for Northern, but a PR victory for WCRC. One day the full story will be told.

However, I do see the green lobby's point about employing two old diesel locomotives, each capable of pulling loads of 8-10 carriages with relative ease, on a 3 coach train. I know, there's no release possible for the leading loco to run round the train for a return trip. When steam left the Lake District DMU's didnt need such a facility. Push-pull units and reliable modern compliant DMUs aren't stock items for rail heritage based groups, and certainly not available for regular and reliable daily running to cope with very occasional emergencies like this.

I suspect that Mr Farrons PR machine** is working more efficiently than WCRC's PR machine !

**a large number of people think that PhotoBomb Farron has made a career out of getting personal credit for other peoples hard work. Maybe, perhaps, possibly, on this occassion, he has been very actively involved in facilitating what has gone on.

The lakes line user group website has the timetable: http://www.llrug.co.uk/
It only includes times for Windermere and Oxenholme though, not intermediate stations.

Does anyone know if the hauled services will operate on Saturday and/or next week please?
Well to answer my own earlier question WCRC will be operating the service on Saturday, the next 2 Sundays, and also the intervening days. The "Welcome" page on the Lakes Line Rail Users Group site has been updated with the time tables.

I'd hate to be the one having to account for all the financial repercussions of this for Northern, or any of the other parties this situation has spread to.

Delay repay will be a massive item on it's own, involving extra staff and probably more complaints about delays. Someone is going to have to pay for the cost of the urgent training, taxis, replacement buses - and these special trains. Ultimately that bill will probably filter back to a government contingencies fund - and one way or another mean reduced spending, on items like further rail improvements, non essential maintenance and subsidised services.

Anyway, I'm now considering how to fit in a trip to Windermere before the special service finishes - a possible win for the local economy?

I'm sure they don't care whether tourists are there to walk the hills, sail on the lakes or get rare haulage!

Likewise, assuming it's operational, I'll be taking my brood on Monday for the day, no doubt spending a fair amount of money on lunch, snacks, a souvenir or two, and maybe a boat ride on the lake. I wouldn't even have thought of going out spending that money otherwise and it would have been a stay at home spend free day. So, that is a definite win for the local economy. Definite PR win for the area and Tim Farron and a massive PR disaster for Northern.

Have read elsewhere that the 37 is allocated to something else on Saturday and will be replaced by 33029.

I wouldn't count on it. 150s can go from Cardiff to Holyhead on a 175 schedule and make PPM. Anyway, a late train is better than no train. Or just run a shuttle from Oxenholme?

Perhaps I should have been clearer. The PPM risk is to other services being held up by the slower 156s. Cardiff to Holyhead doesn't have to mix with 125mph IC services (4 tracks available Cardiff to Newport) nor (sadly) with much by way of freight. A different picture north of Preston.

There's nothing wrong with a 33!

All in all a very good idea, and some undoubtedly useful good publicity for WCR after a couple of torrid years.

The moral of this story for TOC's is either "p*** or get off the pot".

Personally I think they'll actually be anger now if the line gets closed for electrification. People will be saying things like "Why didn't they do the electrification when the line was closed when Northern didn't have enough trained drivers?"

I also wonder if it's electrification they want or the greater number of long distance services which they were promised if electrification went ahead.
I did think it would have been good to make progress with electrification while the trains weren't running. I am sure the regular punters would welcome electrification even if it means a blockade.

Have they swapped over the Rancid Ronnie yet (AKA 57316). Or what over locos have been on the Windermere set.

Closing lines for electrification works has not gone down well with passengers on the Bolton and Blackpool lines, especially the tourists in the case of the Blackpool line. Regular passengers might be willing to put up with short term pain for long term gain but is a few minutes off a trip to Blackpool next year enough for those who had put up with having to move suitcases from trains to replacement buses at Preston this Easter?

Can WCRC just chop and change locos?

Certainly would increase passenger numbers, if only amongst enthusiasts.

Oh for a 4-TC and a 33/1...........

Just booked my ticket for Tuesday so may I please request recommendations for boat trips and pubs?

TIA

Can someone shed a bit of light on this, my googling hasn’t produced any useful info!

I was under the impression EWS supplied the 37s and drivers for the Rhymney's . Don't know about the coaching stock or the exact financial arrangements.

Bus to Bowness, Windermere Lake Cruises 'steamer' to Lakeside, steam train to Haverthwaite and an excellent home-made lunch in the station cafe before the return journey, all assuming time permits.

Short of time for the steam train trip? Lakeside Hotel next to the pier is rather nice.

Do double-check timings.
