People opening cream cheese and chive pringles.

People not taking the diagonally opposite seat when I'm in a bay of four (although I also sympathise as I'll head for the window seat).

People who frown when I open a beer (its not my fault they don't have a buffet car).

General large influxes of people when I'm not expecting them.

I don't commute either (any more) but how about random rail reopening studies that just gobble up astonishing amounts of public money and enrich "consultants" - money which would have been better spent on promoting a more viable line or keeping a local bus service running?

Manual announcers that repeat what the automated announcer just said.

Announcements which don't directly get to the point, but spout a lot of drivel instead.

I'd rather the money was just spent on reopening the line actually.

Delays, cancellations, overcrowded short formation trains, smelly food being eaten, rubbish left behind by other passengers, damp seats, wheel flat vibrations, unresponsive ticket machine touchscreens, stations with only a single ticket machine that's out of order, endless automated announcements, toilets (on board or at a station) that are locked or out of order, waiting rooms that are locked shut, the promise of 'jam tomorrow' from various train operators.

Agreed, but the problem is which line? Gobowen to Welshpool? or Aberystwyth to Carmarthen? I'm sure there are lots more with far better justifications such as potential business(passengers) attracted, or pollution removed from a conurbation etc etc.

We had a very good system recently where reopening proposals for new stations on existing lines proved very successful. There's no reason for not having a similar competition for line reopenings, except that the Establishment don't want it because its too expensive.

How recently was that?

I'm sure you will agree that reopenings wouldn't really be "expensive" if the powers-that-be actually took a broader overview of the costs to society of not doing it. I think it was one of the current lot of hypocrites that coined the phrase "joined up thinking (or Government") but it could have been one of the previous lot. Either way, we haven't seen it done yet. Don't forget the mantras "There is no such thing as society" and "the markets will deliver/decide!" Some Economists have made their careers (and fortunes) promoting this crap (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efficient-market_hypothesis - too long to quote) but it's usually to bolster their own political prejudices or to protect their personal fortunes.

Things that annoy me are starting/finishing work at extreme ends of the day which mean I have to drive to work rather than taking the train (I prefer middles I can pass to and from).

The more extreme earlies/lates alway means one easy journey at either pre 6am or post midnight and one difficult journey either into work (for a late) or back home (from an early) during mid afternoon “school run” time.

Beyond that, dirty, badly maintained and unclean trains, idiots with feet on seats, music being played over loudspeakers.

Disruption which means:
A. I may not get to work in time;
B. I become a target for questions I probably won’t know the answer to.

Being able to take refuge in a back/intermediate cab when commuting to work in uniform is a definite plus (or up front with the driver, depending on who it is <D).

1. PAX who take their anger at being delayed out on the nearest member of railway staff; guess what, we don't come up with reasons to delay you just for a laugh.
2. PAX who lock themselves in the loo in an attempt to avoid paying the fare, depriving every genuine user of the facility the chance to use it so they can avoid paying for a £3.50 single.
3. PAX on a crowded train who still seem to think that their bag / briefcase / coat / newspaper deserves its own seat, in addition to the owner's seat.
4. Staff who regard PAX as an inconvenience; unless you work for a FOC of course!

The new stations fund was fairly recent - within the last couple of years I think.

Oh I agree on the other points though !

Groups of boring middle aged women who are going 'wild' on a day trip for the first time in years. They always seem to choose a table next to me and cause permanent hearing damage.

I remember this once. When they laughed it sounded like a fox in a chicken coup.

….toilets (on board or at a station) that are locked or out of order....

Even worse, the threat that from 2020, on trains that haven't had suitable modifications, ALL toilets will be locked out of use, in order that persons with reduced mobility aren't disadvantaged compared with everyone else.

On Manchester Metrolink pressing the door open button multiple times, expecting it will somehow miraculously make the tram arrive at the stop and the doors open that split second earlier. Or those that wrap themselves around a grab rail like they are auditioning for a job at Spearmint Rhino.

People hanging around in the vestibule so that you struggle to get on even though there is loads of standing space further down inside.

Or even seats - I find it happens a fair bit at the last station before the terminus, especially if it’s only 5 minutes or so.
And then we get stuck waiting for a platform (Leeds ) and they’re standing for another 5 minutes.
Never understood it.

The money is better spent elsewhere, making sure the current network works before re-opening something else, like Manchester Picc platforms 15 & 16, GW Electrification, MML electrification etc.

People standing in the doorway when I'm trying to get on in my wheelchair. I'm getting on and if you insist on standing in the way I will go over/through you. I'm not talking about crammed services, just normal ones.

Also people who tut when they see me getting on in the chair. If you don't like being near wheelchair users, don't sit in the wheelchair compartment.

Delay repay systems that calculate the train that you could have caught, not the one that you actually managed to get on due to overcrowding and a lack of staff to get you on the train
