I'm attending an event this Friday (13th July) and can get either the Victoria Line or Northern Line to my destination from King's Cross St Pancras (coming into St Pancras via Southeastern).
So what would you recommend? In the past, I've had to let three or four Vic trains go in the peak before being able to get on, but that was the old stock, before the upgrade, and heading north from Vic.
Is one choice really any better than the other?

Victoria line every time.

You haven't said where you're travelling to. But assuming Stockwell (served by both the Northern and Victoria lines from King's Cross St Pancras) the Victoria line is so much faster than the Northern line that you could probably let four or five trains go and still beat the Northern line!

Not to mention the "slightly reduced service" on the Bank branch of the Northern Line due to Kennington works

Circle/Metropolitan/H&C/District whenever possible as they are:

a) bigger
b) less crowded
c) more chance of getting a seat
d) air conditioned

Fridays are also noticeably quieter than other weekdays.

I'd go Victoria. If your train into Kings Cross calls at Finsbury Park then join the Victoria Line there.

The TfL journey planner is quite good these days. If your journey is indeed to Stockwell, the planner says it will take you 15 mins on the Victoria, and 20-21mins on the Northern. It doesn't address the comfort level, but at least your suffering will be shorter.
