My son bought a return ticket from Macclesfield to Ainsdale on Friday to come back tomorrow Monday.

He asked me to get train times for monday back to Macclesfield from Southport not Ainsdale with the ticket he has got so i put in times for Ainsdale to Macclesfield on the virgin trains website and some came back that he would have to change at Southport so am i right in thinking that as he is in Southport he would not need to buy a new ticket from Ainsdale to Southport as some of the times told me he would have had to change at southport anyway?

Hope you understand what i am on about as could not think of a better way to explain it!!!!.

Correct,

There are no through trains from Ainsdale to Maccclesfield he has to change at Southport.

He will need to go from Platforms 1-3 (Merseyrail Platforms) to P4 -6 (Northern Rail Platforms) and wwill not need to pass through the ticket barriers als0.

Journey planners suggest changing at Salford Crescent for a train to Piccadilly. Or take the Southport train to Victoria then a train from Victoria to Piccadilly (runs twice an hour but the Southport trains arrives in Victoria minutes before the Piccadilly train so likely to be a 30min wait if you miss it) or take a tram between Victoria and Piccadilly - you'll have to buy a tram ticket as I don't think it's included. Or walk between Victoria and Piccadilly (about 17mins)
