50 years ago tonight

Bolton, Newton Heath and Patricroft close to steam.

Then there were three.

What has happened to commemorating the most damning summer in the history of our railway???

No mainline excursions. One Club Night on the 3rd August and two half hearted attempts on preserved lines! That's it!

Have we lost the plot???

All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –July 1958

Sixty years ago the last 9F 2-10-0 Standard class steam locomotives were still in production, diesel shunter production was in full swing and the Pilot Scheme mainline diesels were being delivered. There was also a steady flow of new diesel multiple units.

In the month sixty six steam locomotives were withdrawn, twenty four being over fifty years old with Midland Railway Johnson 2F 0-6-0 58196 being the oldest, having entering traffic in March 1880 and condemned seventy eight years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older secondary main line and branch line passenger engines, steam shunting engines and older freight engines being displaced by the continued delivery of the last of the 9F standards, the pilot scheme main line diesels, diesel multiple units and diesel shunting engines. Twenty one engines condemned were built post the 1923 grouping with the youngest engine condemned being Great Western Railway 51xx 2-6-2T 4139 at only eighteen years old.

A number I have photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

Thanks for these reports John - they bring back those times vividly - I went with our school "Railway Society" on several shed "bashes" and seeing lines of scrap steam locomotives at all of them.

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – July 1968

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see four Class 50 locomotives delivered.

New Locomotives
Class 50 – D431/32/33/34

The next nine years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

D5515/44/65/99, D5629/56

In the penultimate month before the end of main line steam on British Rail steam withdrawals in the month decreased from seventy to only twelve. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet decreased slightly from forty three to thirty eight with nineteen being from Class 04 and sixteen from Class 10. The non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleet condemnations increased from two to four with three North British Class 16’s and one Clayton Class 17 condemned.
