Today's 1240 Glaagow Central to London Euston 9-car 390 had to run at 115mph all the way down the route but nothing was said as to why except it'll be running "10mph slower than normal" and then when we arrive into Euston it was absolute chaos and everything delayed but again nothing was said why.

Is there any reason the 390 would be running slow and what the problems were at Euston?

Thanks.

If it was just your train running slow, then a guess would be a traction-related defect affecting that particular 390 only?

(I can't see a blanket heat speed restriction on the WCML having such relatively little impact!)

A gentleman jumped/fell from a bridge just north of Euston during the peak. BTP were quickly on scene and with the help of the Met and Euston staff got the injured party away from the lines and to hospital.

Proceeding at 10mph below linespeed is a requirement for a passenger train including a vehicle or vehicles with isolated brakes (as detailed in Rule Book module TW1 section 4 clause 4.4).

We (aboard the 11:10 BHM - EUS) were informed as we passed Watford that there was a heat-related speed restriction in place between Watford Junction and London Euston which would cause a 9 minute delay.

... Provided that the train meets the '1 in 5' rule (that is, for every 1 vehicle with defective brakes, that you have 4 vehicles with operative brakes) and that the brake is continuous throughout the train (not an extreme end vehicle that has the defective brakes).

Sorry.

Got rather nerdily excited there - should have guessed brakes from the off!

You know I debated whether or not to list every requirement from TW1 section 4 and TW5 section 5 but decided against it on the basis that this is primarily an enthusiast’s forum and no one is really that interested in tedious Rule Book minutiae. Looks like I was wrong on that count.

I was on a HST service from Paddington to Reading a few years back that had to run at 100mph max due to a chipped windscreen. Could have been something similar on the service in question?

Another possibility could be that the Tilt mechanism, which means train can go faster around curves is not working, so is limited to conventional line speed of 110 mph, has happened to me a few times.

The brakes on one of the carriages of 390005 were isolated on its previous journey upon its arrival at Preston (07:30 Euston to Glasgow), as the TMS had previously informed the driver of a wheelslip protection fault on that particular carriage of the train.
